Démarate
Démarate (in Greek old Δημάρατος/ Dêmáratos ) king of Sparte (-515 with -491 front J. - C.), of the house of the Eurypontides.
Wire of Ariston which it succeeds, it leaves to shift in -506 with the other king, Cléomène I {{er}}, its rival, before realizing that the purpose of forwarding is to reverse the Pisistratides. It makes half-turn then, with the Corinthiens furious, letting Cléomène only continue. It is the “divorce of Éleusis”.
In -491, Cléomène is avenged by bringing against him a lawsuit, showing it of illegitimacy. The éphore S are consulted about its filiation. The Gérousie being divided, the oracle of Delphes is consulted, and Démarate is relieved the same year. There remains a time with Sparte, but in front of the mocking remarks of Léotychidas II, its successor, he decides to exile himself near the enemy, in Perse.
He goes near Darius I {{er}}, where he is received. He influences Darius in favor of Xerxès, which is then selected like successor, to the detriment of his brother Artabazarne. Before the Battle of Thermopyles, he explains to him which are the characteristics of Sparte. This episode, reported by Hérodote, is an invaluable source of information on the population of Sparte and her political system. Having informed the Greek cities of the imminent attack of Xerxès, it is put at death.
