Démétrius Chalcondylas , one of Greek S which contributed more to spread in Europe the knowledge and the taste of the Greek letters, had been born with Athens towards 1424.
Raise Theodore of Gaza, it taught the Rhétorique in its fatherland until the Prise of Constantinople by the Turkish S. It took refuge in Italy, was destined for Florence by Laurent de Médicis, and taught the Greek in this city, then with Milan. He died towards 1512.
One owes him:
- a Greek Grammar , Milan, 1423;
- a collection entitled Cornueopia , 1499;
- first editions of Homère, Florence, 1488, of Isocrate, Milan, 1493, and of Suidas, Milan, 1499.
