Défacement

A défacement , or défaçage ( defacing in English) is a Anglicisme indicating the not requested modification of the presentation of a Web site, following the Piratage of this site. It is thus about a form of diversion of Web site by a Pirate.

Origin

The défacements are caused by the use of faults present on a Web page or quite simply a fault of the Operating system of the Web server. Most of the time, the défacés sites are it only on the banner page. Défacement in oneself loss of data does not involve.

Characteristics of one défacement

A défacée page can contain several elements:
  • a linked bottom, which can be the only evidence of défacement of a site; most of the time the banner page is white or black
  • a simple word, like owned , hacked or the pseudonym of the défacer
  • an image is rather often present, and posts the claims of the défacer. One often finds symbols referring to dead (craniums…), a flag under which the défacer is proud to act etc
  • sometimes more than one simple word, several sentences, being able to be of different nature (insults towards states, unfavourable défacers; a specific claim…)
  • a simple explanation in the way in which the défacer has receipt the access in writing on the site, accompanied at the time of a mockery towards the Webmaster or the administrator of the site in question
  • more rarely an audio file. It is very often about a battle song because the hackers diffusing an audio file (in streaming) on a Web page often have religious motivations.

Défacers

Competences of a défacer can be evaluated according to several factors.
  • the first is that of the platform to which this one was attacked. For example, an being attacked défacer that with machines under Windows, vulnerable because not patchées, does nothing but exploit software faults and will not be able into practice to put its technique on other platforms. the diversity of platforms to which the défacer is attacked thus constitutes its capacity to be infiltrated on a more or less vast field of machines.
  • the second element is that, of course, of the number of machines carrying its mark. The more important the number of défacés sites is, the more the pirate showed that each target was only one formality of which it quickly got rid to pass to another thing.
  • the third index is consisted the way in which the pirate succeeded in gaining the access in writing on the field concerned. Certain software vulnerabilities being current on not patchées machines (mainly under Windows), the défacer will withdraw only little prestige of this act. On the contrary, if it infiltrates a machine under Linux thanks to a whole of not very current means and requiring a long preparation, it will draw from it much more recognition.
  • But of other factors also intervenes: one défacement comprising insults, images " crues" or incentive with hatred towards a state or an organization will be seen only like religious activism or politically directed. In the same way for one défacement having for original intention the flight of data or vandalism of the database. On the contrary, a défacer explaining without insults the motivations of its act, while specifying with the webmaster how it has it " doublé" and how to correct this fault in the future, moreover without excessive vandalism, will be recognized much more.

Etymology

The English word, which comes from former French “desfacer”, can be returned by “degradation” or “Vandalisme”.
