César-Pierre Richelet
César-Pierre Richelet , born on November 8th, 1626 with Cheminon where he died on November 23rd, 1698, is a Grammairien and Lexicographe French, writer of the first dictionary of the French language.
Richelet was initially regent with the college of Vitry-le-François, then tutor with Dijon. Receipt lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, it gave up the businesses for the letters and sought the company of Perrot d' Ablancourt and Patru. It was strengthened in the old languages, learned the Italian and the Spanish and especially endeavoured to know the origins of the French language.
He is the author of the first French vocabulary made on a methodical level, published under the liter of Dictionnaire Francois, containing the words and the things, several new remarks on the French language, his own, illustrated and burlesques expressions, the pronunciation of the most difficult words, the kind of the names, the mode of the verbs, with the most common terms of arts and sciences: the whole drawn from the use and the classics of the French language (Geneva, 1680,1 vol. in-4.). He had a caustic mood which did many enemies to him and this first edition, of which he was made several counterfeits abroad, is full with satirical features against Amelot of Houssaye, Furetière, Varillas and others.
Richelet published other expurgées and increased editions. Among those which appeared after its death, one distinguishes those from Pierre Aubert (Lyon, 1728, 3 vol. in-fol.) and from Goujet ( ibid , 1759 - 63, 3 vol. in-fol.). Later, one was satisfied to give summaries of them, like that of Gattel (Paris, 1842, 2 vol. in-8).
One still has of Richelet: French Versification, or Art to make and turn the worms well (Paris, 1671, in-12); Beginnings of the French language, or Grammar drawn from the use and the classics ( ibid , 1694. , in-12); Knowledge of the French kinds ( ibid , 1694, in-12). He is also the author of some translations, of a compilation entitled: most beautiful Letters of the best French authors (Lyon, 1689, in-l2; Paris, 1698,2 vol. in-12), and the editor of the New Dictionary of the rhymes (Paris, 1667, in-12), that one allotted to him, but which is of france of Ablancourt.
Its French Dictionnaire is distinguished:
- by the rejection of the dialectal terms,
- by the fact that only the terms of the good use appear in the dictionary,
- by the rejection of the antiquated terms,
- by the rejection of the commonplace terms.
