Cypress
Cypres is a security system for parachutists. It is a release charged to open the Parachute help if the parachutist is still in fall with a certain height. Cypress comes from CY bernetic P arachute RE lease S ystem and was developed by the Airtec company.
The height to which Cypres starts the opening of the help is fixed, nonmodifiable. It acts with a height of approximately 225 Mètre S, if the falling speed is reached only in lower part of 225 meters (e.g. a late release), Cypres will open the help all the same, until a height of approximately 40 meters.
The choice the speed of release of 35 m/s. A. made after many tests during which a speed of more than 31 m/s, veils open, could not be exceeded.
In the version for pupil, the speed of release is reduced to 13 m/s.
Description of the modules
Cypress is composed of a case of control, a case of order and a disconnecting switch for the containers help with a pin of locking or two disconnecting switches for the containers with two pins.
Principle of operation
The case of control contains a Microprocesseur which calculates the falling speed the parachutist and his height compared to the ground thanks to the measurement of the barometric Pression.It is starting from these data which Cypres decides if the parachutist is in a dangerous situation (Freefall with low height) or not. In the affirmative, the container of the help will be opened by Cypres.
Cypress opens the parachute of help by its own means, independently of the order planned for the parachutist, thanks to disconnecting switch EOS ( Emergency Opening System , system of opening of help). Cypress does not withdraw the pin of the loop of the help, but it divides the loop.
This process comprises the following advantages:
- There exist two systems of opening of the parachute of help: the parachutist opens thanks to his hand drive operation of opening, Cypres cuts the loop of closing of the container help;
- a pin of locking twisted is not a problem;
- the mechanical part is reduced to the disconnecting switch;
- Cypres is placed in the container of the help, so as not to be influenceable outside;
- Cypres is invisible outside.
During release, the disconnecting switch advances approximately 5 Misters.
The disconnecting switch is tight. No gas escapes from release; this disconnecting switch was especially designed for Cypres and it is classified nondangereous because of the qualified official services.
Energy source
Cypress functions with two Batteries designed to last approximately two years or approximately 500 jumps. They are piles of high energy, long life, which spontaneously only discharge very little and do not contain heavy metals. The change of piles can be carried out by the user, but an special attention will be however necessary.The state of load of the piles is posted with each starting of the apparatus. After the starting, while Cypres car-is checked, the numbers, from 9999 to 0, ravel with wrong way with the screen and a stop of approximately 3 seconds occurs with a value located between 6900 and 5700. A stop with 6300 for example means that the tension piles is approximately 6,3 volts.
If the procedure of checking is repeated several times of continuation, the posted tension will not be constant. That is normal and comes from the characteristics of the piles. The tension posted with the second or the third test will be lower than the first time but, if the tests are continued, the tension goes up. For a control of tension, the first test will be thus sufficient.
The tension posted at the time of the starting can be very low after a prolonged storage. This is not due to a discharge of the piles but to their characteristics. Indeed, a layer of protection develops during the periods of inaction to limit the self-discharge. So that this layer of protection disappears, it is necessary to light and extinguish the apparatus several times of continuation.
A faulty operation of the piles or a too low tension causes a blocking of the system. Cypress will not take up duty after its self-checking but will post an error code 8999 or 8998. The posting of the one of these codes means that the tension of the piles does not suffice any more for one correct operation of the apparatus.
It is necessary to change the piles as soon as one of the following cases is presented:
- When the self-checking stops on 8998 or 899 (insufficient voltage);
- After two years of use;
- After 500 jumps;
Two points are to be announced on this subject:
-
With each starting, Cypres car-is checked; it checks, in particular, all the internal functions normally allowing a perfect operation during 14 hours. The posting of “0v” to the screen at the end of the sequence indicates the success of these checks. If a dubious situation or of error is detected during the self-checking, Cypres does not post “0v” but an error code, then it dies out automatically. The error code will make it possible to interpret the situation.
- During the operation of Cypress, two units act simultaneously and independently one of the other: the work unit and the control unit. The control unit permanently supervises the work of the first unit and, if it detects an error, it extinguishes the apparatus (principle of the stop in the event of error). According to the gravity of the error, Cypres could or not be restarted. In this last case, it will have to be returned with the factory for control.
Various models
Expert cypress
It is intended to the experienced parachutists. The expert cypress starts the opening of the parachute of help to a height of 225 meters, if the falling speed exceeds 35 m/s. If this falling speed is reached only in lower part of 225 meters (late release, for example), Cypres starts all the same the opening of the help until a height of 40 meters. It does not act as lower part of 40 meters, because in any event, its action would be useless.One recognizes the expert model of the other models to the red key of his case of order.
Student cypress
The cypress student, intended for the pupils starts the opening of the parachute of help to two different heights according to the falling speed: if the falling speed corresponds to a freefall (speed superior to 35 m/s), Cypres acts with 225 meters height as for the experienced parachutist; on the other hand, if the falling speed is slower than a freefall but faster than 13 m/s (open but badly deployed aerofoil, for example), it starts with a height of 300 meters approximately. That must make it possible the pupil to better prepare his landing.One recognizes the model raises with the marked yellow key Student of his case of order.
With a cypress student, it is necessary to pay attention because a vertical speed of 13 m/s can be exceeded with a perfectly inflated sail, at the time of committed turns for example.
Cypress for tandem
One recognizes the Cypres model for tandem with the marked blue key Tandem of his case of order.Cypress for tandem starts the opening of the parachute of help if the falling speed of the parachutist exceeds 35 m/s with a height of approximately 580 meters.
