Cynic
Cynic is a group of Death metal originating in Florida, author of a single album, Focus , left in 1993, which posed the bases of progressive Death. Trained former members of the group Death, Cynic is at the origin of a new projection in the Death metal, style often reduced to a song guttural and a fast and judged music inécoutable. Their single album (republished since with titles no-claims bonus) proposes an at the same time technical, progressive and atmospheric death supported by parts of synthé and a single voice. This group objectively became a reference of the kind, as well as a source of inspiration for many new groups. The group is reformed in 2007 and will make a series in concerts in Europe, in particular in the metal festivals (in Hellfest in Nantes, the New Casino in Paris, Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, Dingwalls with Londre, Nachtleben in Germany, etc).
History
Demonstration
Cynic is formed in 1987 by the singer Jack Kelly, the guitarist (and now singer) Paul Masvidal, the bass player Mark Van Erp, and the beater Sean Reinert. In 1988, the group carries out its first recording, called 88 Demonstration . Little time after, the singer Jack Kelly leaves the group, and Paul Masvidal deals with the song, but it continues to play of the guitar. The group recruits a second guitarist, Jason Gobel. Another demonstration is recorded in 1989, this time called Reflections off has Dying World . Mark Van Erp leaves the group, and is replaced by Tony Choy. In 1990, the new fromation goes in studio to record their third demonstration simply called 90 Demonstration . In 1991, Cynic signs with Roadrunner Records and records its fourth - and last demonstration, named Demo 1991 .
" Focus"
The recording of the album Focus did not arrive immediately after the signature of the contract of Roadrunner Records. Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert played on the album Human of the group Death in 1991, and are obliged to take share with the round of the group in Europe. During this time, the bass player Tony Choy leaves Cynic to join Atheist. The group recruits Sean Malone in replacement, and it envisages to record the album in August 1992. However, the day when Cynic begins the recording of Focus, the Andrew tornado strikes the Florida, destroyed the house of Jason Gobel and the place of repetition of the group, which gives to the group a three months additional time. The group takes this additional time like an opportunity of writing new compositions, the majority of them are on Focus. During the recording, Paul Masvidal was likely to lose his voice, Tony Teegarden taken charges the song " with it; death" , however the voices " robotiques" (using a Vocoder) are made by Masvidal. During the trounée European one with Stench, Tony Teegarden becomes a true member of the group, he plays then of the keyboard and makes the song " death". The bass player Sean Malone cannot take part in the round because of school engagements, Chris Kringel is brought to prednre his place.
Separation
Cynic separates fine 1994 whereas the group worked on its second album. The singer Brian Deneffe is recruited of Wisconsin' S Viogression, but it had short an existence within the group. The reason of final Split of the group started of “musical divergences” - because the members of the group were not agreement on the way to be followed.
The former members of the group go then on different ways. Gobel, Masvidal, and Reinert, with the bass player Chris Kringel and the singer/clavierist Aruna Abrams form the group Portal which with have a short existence - no album, just a demonstration. Sean Malone and Sean Reinert exploit the beginning of CD of the group Aghora. Masvidal and Reinert play in the group Æon Spoke, and Kringel plays with them at the time of the round to the the United Kingdom in 2005.
The members of Cynic met (to play with Bill Bruford, Steve Hackett, and Jim Matheos on various tracks) on the second album of Gordian Knot, Emergent .
Meeting
In September 2006, Paul Masvidal announces that Cynic is again joined together and that the group will play plusior dates during spring/be 2007. In June and July 2007, the group with played 11 shows through Europe in particular at the time of various festivals. The setlist is composed of the album Focus, the song “ Cosmos ” of the demonstration of the late group Portal, a resumption of the Mahavishnu Orchestra 'S “ Meeting off the Spirits ” and a new song, called “ Evolutionary Sleeper ”. One does not know large thing as for the future of the formation, one speculates in a North-American round and possibly a new album (the question would have been put several times and would have had positive returns).
The current formation is composed of Paul Masvidal who always officiates with the guitar and the song " robotique" and Sean Reinert is with the battery. Jason Gobel, the guitarist who with played on the album Focus could not take part in the reformation because of his family and his work. Initially the guitarist Santiago Dobles (ex- Aghora) was to replace it, but it will be David " Mavis" Senescu which will be recruited. Sean Malone who jouat the low one on X-ray, is inalienable also because of his work, Chris Kringel, which with played the low one at the time of the European round of 1993 replaces it then. Tony Teegarden, which ensured the song " death" on X-ray, as well as the keyboard and the song at the time of the Européene round of 1993 takes part in the reformation. However, on June 15th, 2007, it is announced that Teegarden will not join the group on the road because of problems financier because Teegarden had to make very little at the time of representations. All the songs " death" one summer recorded by Teegarden. As a stage with the absence of this last, the group has to organize a contest in order to find somebody to ensure certain songs " death". And it is French, Brett Caldas-Lima which have the immense honor to go up on scene to sing on the title " Uroboric Forms" in Paris and on certain European dates. It should be noted that Brett Caldas-Lima is a musician, producer and sound engineer French officiating in a technical group of death of the name of Kalisia.
Musical style
The first recordings of the Cynic group are rather close to the Death metal, but during the years 1990, their sound changes towards very complex, experimental and extreme technique forms progressive Metal, while remaining attached to their root Death metal. Many influences Jazz and fusion can be heard on the album Focus. The song of the album includes/understands song " death" and of the vox " robotiques". The group formed by certain members of Cynic after his separation, Portal, carries out a demonstration in the line of the style progressive Metal, giving up the influences Death metal.
