Cynewulf de Wessex
Cynewulf de Wessex (death in 786) was King de Wessex of 757 to its death.
Cynewulf became king with the deposition of his predecessor Sigeberht. It may be that it reached the capacity from the influence of Ethelbald of Mercie, because he is quoted like witness in a charter of Ethelbald little time afterwards. Ethelbald however was assassinated soon, and Mercie knew a short period of disorders and fights for the throne. Cynewulf benefitted from the occasion to affirm the independence of Wessex: towards 758, it seized the Berkshire at the expense of Mercie. Cynewulf was also frequently in war against the Welsh.
In 779, Cynewulf was demolishes by the king mercian Offa with the battle of Bensington, to which Offa took again Berkshire and perhaps also London. In spite of this defeat, there is no proof that Cynewulf became prone thereafter of Offa as it was the case of its successor Beorhtric.
In 786 Cynewulf surprised and was killed with its following Marten ( Merantune ) in the Wiltshire by Cyneheard, brother of the king deposited Sigeberht. Certain historians proposed that the relation of this fact in the Anglo-Saxon Chronique is the adaptation of a traditional account, inaccurate in the details.
