Cyclothymia

The cyclothymia is a disorder of the Humeur (thymique Troubles).

It is characterized by a mental state where follow one another of the euphoric periods and of the depressive periods . The mood of the cyclothyme is hot and mobile, passes easily from the sadness to the Gaieté, of the Joie to the Douleur. It varies with environment, is in agreement with the situation. One names also this state Syntonie. The individuals who have this psychic constitution turn towards outside. They are extravertis, sociable, realistic. They take part in the life of the group and are capable of adaptation. Their mood evolves/moves by phases whose changes, generally started by the Milieu, are done abruptly. The tonality of mood impregnates all the psychic life, all the Conscience. The cyclothyme is spontaneous, direct.

The cyclothymia is a bipolar type of Trouble (which was formerly called maniaco-depression) according to official classifications (DSM-IV and CIM 10) and according to classifications of the bipolar spectrum (Klerman, Akiskal). For the CIM 10, the cyclothymia (F34.0 code) is defined like a “persistent instability of mood, comprising many periods of depression or light exaltation (hypomanie), but of which none sufficiently severe or is prolonged to justify a diagnosis of emotional disorder bipolar (F31. -) or of recurring depressive disorder (F33. -)”.

With the difference in the bipolar disorder 1, the cyclothymique one knows only one moderate exaltation (called hypomanie) and with the difference in the bipolar disorder the 2 depressive episodes are moderate. The disorder is established so during many months, hypomaniaques periods with symptoms and periods with depressive symptoms alternate. The disorder, often confused with the temperament cyclothymic, can lead to a bipolar disorder 1 (alternation of manias, severe depressions and free intervals) or a bipolar disorder 2 (alternation of hypomanies and severe depressions).
