Cyclone warning

A cyclone warning is a device of Civil security aiming at protecting the people and the goods threatened by a tropical Cyclone by preventing them from the imminence of the irruption of the phenomena more the violent ones then by informing them on reality of their passage above the zones concerned.

The alert device with the Meeting

From its geographical location, the island of the Meeting is brought to see passing from the tropical climatic disturbances and in particular from the cyclones. With a preventive aim of warning statement against the cyclonic danger, the French authorities created a system of cyclone warning broken up into three levels.

Cyclonic vigilance

Cyclonic vigilance is started as from the moment when a tropical climatic phenomenon evolves/moves on the Mascareignes and constitutes a potential threat for the Meeting in the days to come. At this stage, the economy of the island continues normally.

The exits at sea and long excursions are formally disadvised.

Orange alert

The disturbance approached the coasts and there is a danger in the 24 hours to come. One starts to feel the effects of them: increase in the wind and the Swell.
  • the schools close their doors.
  • In prevention, the private individuals have to make stocks of products of first need (water, oil, rice, preserves, batteries, candles).
  • It is advised to double the Amarre S of the ships.
  • the hazardous substances (gasoline can for example) must be stored in sure places.
  • the insulation of the dwellings is reinforced and the windows are consolidated.
  • the inhabitants should not move away too a long time from their dwellings and they must remain informed to follow the evolution of the cyclonic phenomenon.

Red Alert

The cyclonic danger is imminent. The passage in Red Alert is preceded by a 3 hours notice. During this notice:
  • the public corporations and private close.
  • the objects being able to fly away must be returned or firmly fastened on the ground.

At the conclusion of this notice, a total Couvre-feu is set up with prohibition to leave at home and to circulate under penalty of doors Contravention S, and this same during the passage of the eye of the cyclone, whereas a relative lull is observed. Only the public services of urgencies have an exemption.

  • the electric meters must be crossed.
  • the arrivals or bottles of gas must be closed.
  • It is necessary to listen to the radio to be held informed of advanced alarm.

End of the cyclonic threat

The cyclonic danger is drawn aside, the life on the island turns over to the normal. If the cyclone passed very close to or touched the island:
  • the tap water is not drinkable any more and the inhabitants must consume spring water out of bottle until the health authorities confirmed a return to the normal.
  • To in no case one should not touch fallen wire with ground, which they are electric or telephone.
  • the victims, damage and needs must be declared with the Mairie.
  • It can be imprudent of going on the coasts or on the or river bank in believed Ravine S. It is interdict to cross these last.
