The Cycle of the Royal Assassin is a series of novels written by Robin Hobb between 1995 and 2003 which are held in a Medieval-fantastic world .
In the original edition, is appeared in first The Farseer Trilogy ( Assassin' S Apprentice , 1995; Royal Assassin , 1996; Assassin' S Quest , 1997), trilogy to which the author had not envisaged a continuation. Another trilogy, not belonging to the cycle of the royal assassin but located in the same universe, was published by Robin Hobb thereafter, it acts of the Adventurers of the sea, its original title The Liveship Traders ( Ship off Magic , 1998; Mad Ship , 1999; Ship off Destiny , 2000).
The author affirms that after having finished Assassin' S Quest , she believed the adventures of Fitz and Insane finished - before understanding that she was mistaken. It was thus harnessed with the writing of one second trilogy, The tawny man , continuing the cycle of the Royal Assassin ( Fool' S Errand , 2001; Golden delicious Fool , 2002; Fool' S Fate , 2004) with the majority of the characters of the first cycle. Fact surprising for a continuation which had not been envisaged, this one is of a rare coherence, and appears not only the logical continuation of the first cycle, but especially its essential conclusion.
Three points are to be cleared up for the French readers wishing to begin in this universe. Because if the French translation of Arnaud Mousnier-Lompré is of high-quality, on the other hand the choices of the French editors were more dictated by the commercial interests that by logic.
First of all, and it is most important for the reader, the trilogy of the Adventurers of the Sea is located chronologically between the two cycles of the Royal Assassin. I.e. between volumes 6 and 7 of the French version. The second cycle takes again certain crucial factors developed in the Adventurers of the sea, without their reading being for as much essential (comparable in that with the manner whose Asimov makes converge its two major cycles, the Robots and Foundation, in the last volumes of Foundation). It is particularly diverting when it is known that the French editor, Pygmalion, stopped the translation of the Adventurers of the Sea to make appear that of The tawny man .
Moreover, the English volumes are cut out in 1,2 then 3 volumes, probably with measurement of the business success growing of the series. And the French version presents the two cycles of the Royal Assassin like a whole without discontinuity.
Lastly, to still complicate the things the four volumes of “the Citadel of the shades”, also published by Pygmalion, are not other than bulkier versions of the Royal Assassin: the first two volumes recover the first trilogy, volumes 3 and 4 the second.
Cycle of the White Prophet (in English The Tawny Man )
It should be noted that the volumes above are gathered by 3 in the named collection " The Citadel of Ombres".
The legend of the Six-Duchies wants that the name that a family member carries royal is representative of its personality. King Subtil had three wire, Chevalerie, Vérité and Royal. This last is resulting from the second marriage of the king; it is thus younger than his two half-brothers. Moreover, his/her mother is of high birth than the first wife of the king, this is why it chose the Royal first name, because it estimates that his/her son is priority to reach the throne, in front of both other wire of Subtle.
Loinvoyant are the descendants of Outrîliens which wearied plundering were installed on a territory which will become later their kingdom: Six-duchies. Directing the coast initially, they then annexed the two duchies of the Interior.
Loinvoyant have a predisposition for the magic of Art from where the fact that Art is often described as Royal Magic. But little before the beginning history, much of knowledge on this magic was lost and its effect is disparaged by the inhabitants of the Six-Duchies.
Fitz is the bastard one of Knighthood. This name is in fact the abbreviation of its true complete name, FitzChevalerie Loinvoyant. It had a little less than 6 years when it came in Castlecerf where it was raised by Burrich, the Master of stable of Castelcerf and former servant of Knighthood. It is also him which gave its name to Fitz, name which means simply " bâtard" in its native tongue.
Fitz simultaneously has capacities in Art (royal magic) and the Sharp one (sinister magic of reputation). It bound by the Sharp one successively to two dogs then a wolf, the Eye-of-night , with which the bond was longest, deepest and most intense. This last will follow Fitz without never including/understanding everywhere the human ones completely. Faithful and robust, it saves the life on several occasions to him. In particular once where Fitz will take refuge in the body of the wolf to escape death, which will leave him after-effects. In fact, the bond between Fitz and Eye-of-night are deeper than the ordinary bonds between an animal and a member of chalk-lining.
FitzChevalery can also count on the deep friendship of Insane, a not very ordinary character related to his destiny. During the history, the Insane one/Bien-Aimé/Ambre/lord Doré fall in love with FitzChevalerie and it is shown that it is the downward one of a line of beings called the White.
Called the Bastard one with Sharp, FitzChevalerie became a character of legend among the inhabitants of the Six-Duchies. For some an assassin, others a hero; some try to use its notoriety to appease their personal thirst for being able.
It is at the commencement of the series the king of the Six-Duchies. This lucid and intelligent old man makes sure honesty of Fitz when this one is 10 years old, but it becomes increasingly senile and unrecognizable with the wire of time. Exhausted physically, it ends up taking drugs which provides him indirectly his/her son, Royal, and Umbre to which it remains despite everything until his death conscious of what occurs and finishes its life at the sides of its grandson while trying to contact his honest son, Vérité.
Oldest son of Subtle, faithful to his name and skilful negotiator, it was loved of the people. King-being useful on arrival of Fitz (title given to the heir to the kingdom at its 17 years to make have patience its ambitions and form it with the capacity), the entry at the Court of Castelcerf of this wire illegitimate, because conceived apart from the marriage, the fact of giving up the throne. Chevalerie Loinvoyant spent the last years of its life to Flétribois, a small rather rich stronghold, but without much importance. He died shortly after of a fall of horse… Its abdication had in fact like objective to protect FitzChevalerie from the intrigues of the Court.
Loinvoyant by alliance, it is the woman of Knighthood. She often acts in an eccentric way, out of the standards of the nobility and dealt with part of education of Fitz. She particularly appreciates the flowers and it is like that she approaches the new Kettricken queen. When Royal gives up the castle of Castelcerf, it appears like empowered woman perfectly able to manage a duchy in times of crisis: woman-leader, it will recover all the moral authority of the command of the forces remained to defend the castle, not leaving the lord Shining, cousin of Royal, that the nominal command. It is with it that the reports/ratios are brought, it is it which decides defense and pays part of the soldiers with its personal richnesses. Its lady's companion, although in background, is very effective: skilful any task, bodyguard if need be, it makes sure that the eccentricities of its lady are benign.
When the Six-Duchies were not able any more to dam up the threat of the Red Pirates, Vérité decided to go to seek Anciens which had promised of the assistance to the Six-Duchies. With this intention he undertook a forwarding through the mountains, leaving Kettricken and the throne of the Six-Duchies vulnerable vis-a-vis the ambition of Royal.
To have is the son of Kettricken and Truth when this one took possession of the body of Fitz to link last once with his wife. It is the product of its double culture, ready with the sacrifice thanks to the education of his mother, it was born in the middle of the intrigues from the court what accustoms it to it. Like Fitz, his/her biological father, it is endowed with Art and Sharp. This last fact is kept secret, but certain Magpie (see summarized of the second cycle) know and tried it to use this information with their profit.
Half-brother of Knighthood and Truth, wire of king Subtil and his second wife, the queen Desire, it wants to go up at all costs on the throne. His brothers and his nephew constituting an obstacle of size to its ambitions, it does not have of cease to draw aside them from the succession. Cheating and dangerous, it is the sworn enemy of Fitz.
In the first cycle, he is the faithful secret adviser of king Subtil who employed it like assassin. He ensures also the role of chief of the intelligence services and spy, like trainer in these fields. It is with him that Subtil gives the role of trainer of Fitz, for which the two men test a real affection. Very discrete man and even more mysterious, it undertakes also chemical experiments like those on the gunpowder. Completely devoted to its sovereign, adviser of the Crown, it is very qualified in these fields. Its hailed face of scars (following an experiment missed in its youth) points out " physically; Grêlé" a mythological êrsonnage cursed by the god of the sea El, and who became the personification of misfortune, of died and of the suffering. Elder half-brother of Subtle, it was born on the bad side of cloths (bastard, just like Fitz), which deprived it at the same time of the crown and one formation to Art (the bastard one not having normally access there). This is why he will strongly insist at Subtil so that Fitz is formed with the royal magic. Its ignorance of Art is its great failure, which undermines it constantly. As soon as he at the time of learning how to make use of Art, he does not hesitate and launches out sometimes in an unreasoned way (by forgetting the precautions to be taken, to see the part on Art) in this magic. Under the reign of Subtle, he lived hidden in the secrete ways and the hidden parts of Castelcerf. When it was to leave, it was dissimulated under various identities, like that of Lady Thyme, a very old woman acariâtre.
At the time of the reign of Kettricken (second part), it leaves its hiding-place finally at the great day under the name of Umbre Tombétoile, Conseiller of the Queen, and benefits fully from all the advantages of the life at the court. He does not forget any therefore to manage the secret businesses and the intrigues implying the Six-Duchies. He comes from there little by little to exchange his knowledge with Fitz, to which he finally allotted the abstract role of Companion (and more Apprenti).
Friend of childhood of Fitz, their relation changes with the wire of time to make place with a strong and passion love which knows many turnings. Independent and proud, she is wary of the men and manages very well all alone. She will have a child of Fitz: Nettle. However, Fitz having officially found death in the dungeons of Royal, Molly will find unmarried mother. She will end up marrying with Burrich, with which she will have other children.
Wire of Burrich and Molly, it is endowed with Sharp, from where " frictions" important with his/her father (abandonment of the family home for the royal palace) because Leste refuses to conceal its magic; it is on the contrary to trust.
Official buffoon of king Subtil, actually a friend and an extremely close and faithful adviser, it loves his sovereign deeply. Near to Fitz which he admits to have seen it in dream like a capital element for the future of the Six-Duchies, he tries to help by his great knowledge this child lost in the court of large, but in an always indirect or diverted way (he speaks to him by enigmas). It is perhaps about the second most important character of the novel. It is learned that he is the White Prophet of this generation and that this title is disputed by a power hidden in the islands of Overseas. He affirms that Fitz is his catalyst, the person through whom he will be able to reorientate the world towards a better way. He has, moreover, one gift for extraordinary work manual, especially after Vérité accidentally touches it with its impregnated hands of Pure art, which leaves with Insane the three fingers partially covered with this strange silver plated substance. Thanks to this touch of Art, it can all know of an object or a person, simply in concerning. It is all the more sensitive to their nature, with the grain of a wood for example.
Very complex character resulting from grounds located at the south of Castelcerf, unknown factors of the inhabitants of the Six-Duchies, it seems to have several identities, including one female (Amber), which frustrates much Fitz, which sometimes doubts to really know his friend. Another of the identities of insane is Lord Doré, a noble foreigner of Jamaillia, richissime, popular and influential at the court of Castelcerf, whose statute from abroad justifies a life extravertie with original manners. Like the Insane one with humor says it: " What would be noble without a whiff of scandal? " , it has a rather sulfurous reputation, especially concerning its sexual orientation (in particular, it lets several times hear that it is in love with Fitz). These identities are so different that Fitz does not recognize at all the character who made laugh King Subtil when the insane one endorses the identity of Lord Doré or Amber. Fitz is however persuaded to be that which knows best this strange character who claims to be the White Prophet, assertion several times questioned by Fitz, even by Insane him even.
When Fitz meets it, its dye is pale. But at the time of their meeting again, 15 years after the end of the search of King Vérité, it has a ambrée color. It seems to age very slowly and had in its childhood of the visions of the possible futures.
This character appears at the same time in the cycle of the royal assassin and in that of the Aventuriers of the sea (under its Amber identity).
This young man trained with Art by Galen is one of the adversaries of the most frightening Art of Fitz. Powerful and completely devoted to Royal, it makes several attempts to eliminate the bastard princely one. Intelligent, extremely and crafty one, it represents for Fitz a considerable threat. He is closer to Royal than his two comparses Ronce and Carrod and assumes the role of chief of clan (a clan unified by the fear and not a pure union) and thus of man of the king, after the death of Serene and Justin. He protects it at the time of the desperate attempt of Fitz when this last tries to make introduce of Royal force a sachet of poison during its interrogation: it is the heart damnée of Royal which receives the powder on the face, which causes in Artiseur the loss of an eye. Fitz will realize of the consequences of its action despaired on its enemy only when it is introduced into the palate of Royal with Ford-of-Trade and there is trapped by Guillot. This infirmity obstructs much Royal, because his/her mother inculcated to him a deep dislike for decreased physical the or mental ones.
This strange character is slightly deformed. Moreover, its spirit functions differently of the others (he lives in a world filled with music), with the result that much takes it for an idiot. Heavy is the character who has Art most strongly, but without having the possibility of controlling knowledge pushed, necessary to use this power correctly. It creates starting from the noises of its environment a music, but only the not very coherent words leave its mouth, from where its rejection by the others. One cannot maltreat it physically if one is sensitive to Art, because Lourd uses it then to divert its enemies of him. Fitz will have sometimes painful difficulties to force Lourd by the force. Heavy is " utilisé" in the Clan like " réservoir" with magic.
Like the insane one, she claims to be the White Prophet of this generation. But its goals are radically different from those of the insane one. Whereas this last tries to protect the line from Loinvoyant, she sees of an good eye their disappearance. One learns in the second cycle that it was the instigator of the attacks of the Red Pirates at the time of their war against the Six-Duchies and that in spite of its declining power, it continues until the end to represent a threat.
Character holding an important place among the members of Chalk-lining, it decides to remain with the castle when the queen agrees to take with her service gifted people of Sharp. He is wise and tries to transmit his knowledge. He is related to a named gull Risque. The respect that the other members of Chalk-lining dedicate to him is perhaps due to its very open behavior, whereas the vifiers are accustomed to hiding. But this opening will make it possible to learn the benefits from Sharp with the inhabitants from the Six Duchies, to reduce their unreasoned mistrust towards the Sharp one and their fatal desires.
It appears that the Different ones are in fact of the malformés dragons. The author presents them in " adventurers of the sea " with the vivenefs (boats magic and endowed with intelligence)
The names of the characters of the mountains were preserved
Subtil Loinvoyant chooses, under the influence of his second wife, to raise Galen (the bastard half-brother of Royal) with the row of apprentice of Solicited, his growing old mistress of Art. But with died of this one, Galen proclaimed new Master of Art, issued the training of the artiseurs (princes Chevalerie and Vérité) finished, ceased gathering and training artiseurs. So knowledge on Art disappeared little before the beginning from the history.
The influence of the actions of Galen are very visible during all the first part.
We learn at the end that many treaties on Art are found at the Pale Woman who controlled Article
The artiseurs train clans serving their sovereign, although some only work. Art is a formed magic of a flow of magic, in the current of which the user " immerge" , as in a river. However, it can be dangerous: art is a drug, which devours the artisor of a hunger of Art by pushing it with artiser, even without any goal. The artiseurs without much experiment or decreased by tiredness or the wounds can be trained in the current of Art, and their spirit disappears then, by making idiots. The distance imports little for Art, two artiseurs very distant can exchange their ideas as if they were very close, but a physical contact between the artisor and his partner facilitate certain operations like forcing a mental stopping of Art, to find a artisor lost in the current of the magic or quite simply to transmit or take energy to another artisor…, at least for the artiseurs little experienced like is all the characters because of disappearance of the Masters of Art.
Moreover, time is shifted in Art: the artiseurs can spend the hours in the current of Art whereas in fact, only a few seconds ran out. On the contrary, they can even disappear from the months of the decades and to reappear such as they were with their departure. The acquisition of new competences with Art is innate; the artisor with the intuition that it can do it, and the fact!
The artiseurs are warned at the beginning of their formation of the dangers of this magic. The attraction which this magic exerts on its users increases proportionally with the use that makes the artisor of it, and this attraction is more powerful than the thing more attracting for the person. Many clans finished their lives while moving towards the Mountains, a special stone quarry and carved there dragons stone by putting at it their feelings, their memories… until disappearing in the stone, giving life to the dragon. It is a difficult process and the failures of too ambitious clans are visible in the vicinity of the career. These stone dragons preserve their memories of human life initially, but time moves away the spirit from the dragons of their preceding humanity.
This magic presents defects all the same: for example, the lifespan of the animals is seldom as long as that of the human ones. And the bond linking a vifier and his animal being flexible of very strong division (being able to go until the exchange of the spirits), its crack is extremely painful.
The Sharp one is very badly perceived by the inhabitants of the Six-Duchies since the death of prince Pie, prince Loinvoyant having the Sharp one. The exactions of this prince were such as a long time after his death, the habit remained to hang the vifiers and to cut out them, before throwing their ashes with water. The inhabitants of the Six-Duchies not ppartenant with Chalk-lining there see a form of perversion and exterminate those which they call the " vifiers" , which obliges the members of Chalk-lining to hide. People believe that this magic makes it possible to change into animals, to make use of them like tools or spies, that it is a cheap magic which can transform a man into animal. This magic is misunderstood, even by members of families of Chalk-lining which do not have this magic. The Sharp one is completely different from Article It is its exact antithesis. Whereas Art serves as the purely human goals, the members of Chalk-lining have great affinities with nature, without however denying their statute of human.
There exist other types of magics evoked at the time of the novels. The magic of fire, magic of reading of the future, that which makes it possible to build intelligent boats…
Umbre Tombétoile has the gift of reading in water, which enables him to see events since its secret apartments.
According to a theory developed in the books, the various magics can be represented on a circle. Some are close and from the particularly skilful people to the use of one of these magics can learn from the capacities in the other close magics (magic of the hedges and reading in water, for example). Others are on the other hand, from where a hatred between their members; the Sharp one and Art is the example given to justify the hatred of Artiseurs towards Vifiers, and conversely. However, one can doubt this opposition, since the users of these two magics simultaneously can establish a bridge and employ them simultaneously: Eye-Of-night wounds Guillot via the bond of Art that this one has establishes with Fitz, and Fitz acquires some knowledge by looking after using Art its Wolf while passing by the bond of Sharp.
