A linear hiéroglyphe is a version simplified of a Hiéroglyphe.
The linear writing (or reduced writing ), was invented to mitigate two main issues of the crowned hieroglyphic writing, namely a very long execution time to trace each character, and the maladjustment of this writing on the not engraved surfaces. In fact, the linear hiéroglyphes were used for the texts whose esthetism did not have a paramount importance. Whereas the crowned hieroglyphic writing stuck to the details and to make each character, a work of art to whole share, the linear writing, it, is delayed only on the minimum allowing the comprehension of the character. Although they preserve their figurative aspect, the linear hiéroglyphes are a step ahead towards the abstraction which will lead to the creation of the hieratic writing.
