Cy Touff
Cy Touff (Cyril James Touff) is a American Jazz man born the March 4th 1927 with Chicago and deceased the January 24th 2003 with Evanstown (Illinois).
It is one of rare the specialist in jazz in the bass Trumpet (instrument rather little used of which the Tessiture and the technique is rather close to those of the Valve trombone but whose sound is more “metal”).
Biography
Cy Touff studies in its youths the Piano, the Saxophone and the Xylophone before learning the Trompette and the Trombone. From 1944 to 1946, it is Tromboniste in a military orchestra. Released, he studies with the pianist and theorist Lennie Tristano. It is always as trombonist whom he plays in the Années 1940 for musicians Bill Russo, Charlie Ventura, Ray McKinley, Boyd Raeburn,… At the end of the years 1940, he adopts the bass Trumpet définivement.
From 1953 to 1956, he is member of the Big band of Woody Hermann. As from 1957, he becomes musician “free lance” with Chicago where he takes part in many scéances of studio, occurs in many formations and records some albums under his own name.
Music
Although the name of Cy Touff is often associated with the Jazz West Coast, this musician, who primarily exerted in the area of Chicago, practiced all kinds of styles of the Dixieland to the Cool jazz while passing by the jazz mainstream.
