Cut Intertoto
The Coupe Intertoto is a competition of Football which takes place in summer between the best European clubs which are qualified neither for the Ligue of the Champions nor for the UEFA Cup.
History
The Intertoto Cut was created in 1961 by Ernst Thommen and Karl Rappan so that the European companies of bets have matches on which to bet during the summer. Although UEFA was rather against the bets, it authorized all the same the behavior of this competition but did not deal with its organization.
The louse is the name given to the sporting lotto (or lotto foot) in good number of European countries. One can thus summarily translate " cut intertoto" by " cross between/of the lottos sportifs". This identity is recalled in the logo of the competition, which takes again the boxes that the punter must notch " 1" (team playing with residence gaining) " X" tie or " 2" equip gaining visitor.
Until 2002, the winners received a cut, from now on it is about a plate. Another innovation, the unhappy finalists receive a medal, which was not the case previously.
The competition was organized of 1961 with 1967 in the form of a phase of groups, then of semi-final, quarterfinals and finale. Starting from 1967, it did not have there any more that the phase of groups and, so no winner was indicated.
Dutch Piet Keizer was the first player to gain the Cut of Europe of the Clubs Champions (as captain of Ajax, and with 3 recoveries), after having obtained this cut as a preliminary (at the time of its 1st edition).
In 1995, UEFA decided to take again the organization of the competition and reorganized completely it, by authorizing the winners in particular to be taken part in the UEFA Cup.
The November 30th 2007 the executive committee of the UEFA decides that starting from 2009 this competition will disparaîtera to leave room to a new formula of UEFA Cup.
Format
The format of the cut changed in 2006: previously, the cut comprised five turns, the first proceeding with the clubs of smallest associations, the largest clubs entering to the second or third turn, the “final” fifth turn being called although it had there actually three matches, the three winners were qualified for the first tower of the UEFA Cup. As from the edition 2006, there is no more that three turns and the eleven gaining teams are qualified for the preliminary second round of the UEFA Cup. Each association has a place cuts Intertoto from there. On the other hand, contrary to the preceding editions, the final winner of the Intertoto Cut is designated through the courses of the 11 clubs transferred in UEFA Cup. The club which highest reaches the stage in C3, is indicated Vainqueur Intertoto Cut.
Thus, in 2006, it is Newcastle which is indicated victorious official test since it is the only club from the Intertoto Cut to have reached sixteenth of finale in UEFA. Until 2005, the three qualified clubs of the “finales” were declared covainqueurs of the competition, whatever the continuation of their course in C3.
Prize list
Of 1967 with 1994, only the phase of groups of the cut was played. There thus was not of finale and winner.
In 2006, is declared victorious official Intertoto cut because it is the club which went further in following cut UEFA.
