Curse of Cham
The Curse of Cham or more exactly Malédiction of Canaan is a biblical episode during which Canaan is punished in the place of his/her father, Cham. This one indeed contemplated the nudity of his/her own father, Noah.
Cham is also written Ham, according to the way in which one transcribes the Hebraic name חם. This name decides with a H strongly aspired: Hham .
Biblical bases
Curse
After the Flood, Noah leaves the Arche with his three sons: Sem, Cham and Japhet. The Genesis 9:19 - 21 indicates: These trois-là was the wire of Noah and from them was made the settlement of all the ground. Noah, the farmer, started to plant the vine. Having drunk wine, it was enivré and was stripped inside its tent.
In Genesis 9:22 - 27, the Bible reports then the episode of the curse:
22. Cham, father of Canaan, saw the nudity of his/her father and informs his two brothers with-outside the . 23. But Sem and Japhet took the coat, reflects it both on their shoulder and, going to move back, covered the nudity of their father; their faces were turned behind and they do not transfer the nudity of their father . 24. When Noah awoke of his intoxication, it learned what his/her son had done to him, young person . 25. And he says: Cursed is Canaan! How it is for his brothers the last of the slaves! 26. It also says: Blessed either YHWH, God of Sem, and that Canaan or its slave! 27. Qu' Elohim increases Japhet, which he lives in the tents of Sem, and which Canaan is its slave!
The descent of Cham
The tradition Judeo-Christian often regards Cham as the ancestor of the black people. His/her brothers Sem and Japhet are respectively the ancestors of the inhabitants of the East and Europe. Sem, in particular, is the grandfather of Abraham, itself ancestor of the Arab and the Hebrew .According to the Bible, Canaan has ten wire. According to the tradition, these " Cananéens" are in particular the Phéniciens of Sidon, the Amorites and the Jébuséens. The Pays of Canaan such as it is defined in Genesis 10:19 corresponds to old the Phénicie, their territory. This territory is formed today by the Syria, the Lebanon and part of the Jordan.
Curse of Cham or Canaan?
The act of Cham
The Biblical text referred to above elliptic remainder as for the nature of the act of Cham: it " the nudity of sound père" saw;. The Judaism and Christian interpretation propose several interpretations, which besides do not have a sexual connotation inevitably. Indeed, the Hebraic expression " to see (or discover) the nudity of quelqu'un" can mean simply: to make shame with somebody, to humiliate it. But it can also imply an act of an extreme gravity. In this case, according to one of interpretations of the Judaism, Cham " would have; humilié" his/her father by making a inceste with his/her mother or even, according to the Talmud, while misusing him. What leaves the free field to multiple assumptions.
The judaïque tradition
As much the act Cham remains mysterious in this text, as much the object of the curse appears there explicitly: Cursed Noah Canaan, and him only. No word is marked against Cham. Why this is Canaan which owes " payer" ? What did it occur? That is not specified. In any event, there does not exist " curse of Cham" strictly speaking, neither in this passage nor elsewhere in the Bible. The judaïque tradition refers only to the " curse of Canaan" and only Cananéens indicates, i.e. Phéniciens and the people of the same area.
Lastly, the three others wire of Cham, i.e. Koush, Misraïm and Pout, are not the subject of any curse. Koush corresponds in theory to the Ethiopian , Misraïm with the Égyptien S and Somali Pout with the S.
The justification of slavery
In Islam
The topic of alleged a " curse of Cham" aim at accrediting the thesis of a racial supremacy of the White on the descendants of Cham, " blackened by their péchés". It is proven that the raids in the pagan areas of Africa led to the triangular Commerce and with the treats Blacks. However, there does not exist proof that Islam, as such, was used to try to justify the unjustifiable one. The fact is of as much less probable than the Coran reports any episode showing drunk and naked Noah. In the Islam, Noah, considered as a Prophet, is an exemplary man who would not know enivrer. He is thus humiliated per none of his sons and does not take place to pronounce some curse that it is.
Beginnings of Christianity
In Occident, the myth of the " curse of Cham" is attested as of the first centuries of the Christian era.
The controversy of Valladolid
However, it is especially in second half of the 16th century that one used the idea of an alleged inferiority of the people of Africa. The economic interest, for the Spanish S left with the conquest the the Antilles and the South America, required that they find a labor free (or more exactly costing only the " price of achat") to exploit the territories of the New World. Initially, at the beginning of the Conquista, there had been some discussion about reducing in slavery the Indiens of South America. Or at least those which had not been massacred by the Conquistador be. For the needs for the cause, these Indians transfer themselves then definite like animals, beings deprived of heart. But, at the time of the Controversy of Valladolid, in 1550, the Moine Dominicain Las Put, only, took their defense against the interests of the emperor Charles Quint and obtained that one regarded them as human beings with whole share. Consequently, its intervention put an end to this attempt control. This outcome fell under the logic of a pontifical Bulle published 13 years earlier by the Pape Paul III, Veritas ipsa (" the Truth it-même"), to condemn the slavery of the Indians. The question of free labor moved then towards the people of Africa: at the end of the controversy of Valladolid, the Legate of the new pope, Jules III, allied policy of Charles Quint, recommended the use of the Africans in the place of the Indians.
Then remained to show that it was legitimate to use as slaves the men and the women with the black skin. The elliptic aspect of the text of the Bible undoubtedly made it possible to compare Cham to Canaan. And thus to pervert the direction of this passage to transform it into a justification a posteriori.
Practice
At the end of the 17th century, the black Code promulgated in France, for example, ratifies what is already an irrefutable fact. Slavery neither is explained there, nor justified: there exists. The practice is established. It is a question of adding a legal framework to him. In other words, the fate of the Africans and the triangular Commerce was played in the space of approximately a century. Then, with the S, whereas a racist ideology develops on a basis this time pseudo-scientist, the myth of the " curse of Cham" reappears to justify l'" infériorité" blacks in the slave context then Colonial ist.
In this respect, two countries occupy a particular place in the relation between the slavery of the Africans and the alleged curse of Cham: the the United States and the Belgian Congo.
