Curepipe

Curepipe is the second town of Maurice. It is located on the heights, almost in the center of the principal island, in the district of the Plaines Wilhems. One says of Curepipe that it is the most European city of the country because of its wet and cold climate. Its many shops of factory and net of tax make of Curepipe the place of the good deals.

Geography

The climate there is cold and wet during wintry time, but becomes a refuge privileged during the hot season, with the overpowering temperatures which the littoral knows then.

Located on the central plate of the island, the city has a certain charm which is lost because of absence of maintenance of the public highways or of the buildings.

One finds a volcanic Cratère there called Hole-with-Stags, which can be visited.

History

Founded by the colonists French who fled the Paludisme, the city always counts some beautiful residences “creole S” which make the charm of the island. The center town includes/understands beautiful architectural works like the town hall, the Carnegie library, the Royal college or the church Sainte Therese.

Anecdote

The name Curepipe comes owing to the fact that, during the Napoleonean period, the soldiers of the Emperor had installed a garrison there: their principal occupation consisted to smoke the Pipe and to clean it when it was stopped.

Climate

Being located on the heights of the island, the city is rich in moisture. However, it profits from an ideal climate in summer.

The French college

The principal French college of the island is in Curepipe: the College Bourdonnais (). With each year with the baccalaureat, an average rate of success of 100% in the general dies and bordering the 98% all confused dies, it appears among the best French colleges from abroad.
