Etymology

The name of Cundinamarca is a deformation of the Quechua Kuntur marqa ( Nid of the condor ). The Spanish conquistadors by hearing these two words interpreted them like Cundirumarca , Cuntinamarca and finally Cundinamarca , which in Spanish could consequently mean comarca or province of the condor . Namarca is a deformation of the word comarca or marca , which corresponds to the word walk in French, and meaning frontier province more or less .
