Culture of the pastel
The pastel , cultivated in the Lauragais at the 16th century, ensures the fortune of some Toulouse merchants . These international merchants transform part of their richnesses into private mansions, generally built out of bricks, which give to a coloring particular to the Renaissance provincial Frenchwoman (for example the prestigious Hôtel of Assézat).
The trade of the pastel is ruined in second half of the XVIe century with the arrival of tinctorial plants coming from America. It is mainly about the Indigo, dyeing of less good quality, but less expensive. The appearance of the indigo on the market of Antwerp causes the complete bankruptcy of the die.
The pastel was given in culture only in 1999. There is currently a very beautiful exposure to the castle of Magrin in the Tarn. Exposure with accompanying notes by the owner
