Culture of Saqqaq

The culture of Saqqaq is one of the two older civilizations known with the Greenland. It owes its name with the establishment of Saqqaq (in the area of Ilulissat), place of many archaeological lucky finds.

The culture of Saqqaq seems to have been founded in the west of Greenland by Amerindian populations come from the Canada in the neighborhoods from. It is then attested in the west and the south-east of Greenland and ends up disappearing towards under conditions still badly elucidated (perhaps related to a cooling of the climate).

The culture of Saqqaq coexisted with the culture Indépendance I (which developed in the north of Greenland towards and remained there until). After the disappearance of the culture of Saqqaq, other cultures developed in Greenland from, in particular the culture Indépendance II, with north, and the culture of Dorset, in the west.
