Cinema

The African cinema is particularly alive in Burkina Faso. Born from a political will, as of the independence of the the Upper Volta in 1960, to develop a released national cinema of the colonial domination, it begin with creation from a cell cinema within the Ministry for Information. This one carries out especially the documentary ones of popularization aiming at the rural populations.

In 1970, the government nationalizes the distribution and the exploitation of films and creates a public corporation, Sonavoci (National company Voltaic of the Cinema, now dissolved), whose benefit feed the promotion of cinema industry.

In 1969 the Panafrican Festival of the cinema and television of Ouagadougou FESPACO is created on the initiative of film enthusiasts. Become biennial, it is one of the great cultural events of Ouagadougou.

The Panafrican Festival of the cinema and the television of Ouagadougou acquired an international repute. Its founders did not hope any so much: they wanted initially just to make known the African cinema with the Africans. Return on the birth and the evolution of this biennial demonstration with Alimata Salambéré, one of the founders of Fespaco.

The Panafrican Festival of the cinema and the television of Ouagadougou FESPACO is the greatest African festival of cinema (one says festival who it is the Cannes festival of Africa).

In 1979 is created a complex of studios of production and turning, financed by capital deprived with a State aid.

The topics of the Burkinabe cinema evolved/moved little by little of the production of documentary films or exotics towards a critical glance on the company (Néo-colonialisme, Condition of the women, Corruption etc)

Every two years, the even years, the capital of Burkina Faso is transformed into window of the African craft industry. In 2006, the living room had attracted three a thousand of exhibitors from all Africa, from the professionals or the unloaded collectors of the five continents, and 500.000 visitors amateurs on the whole. The living room of Ouagadougou wants to be the window of the know-how of the Burkinabe craftsmen, but also of all Africa. The SIAO evolved much /moved and is addressed in priority to the professionals, with the exporters, even with the collectors which will come to place order in this gigantic artisanal market. In parallel, it allows the craftsmen come from the four corners of the continent to meet, exchange their techniques of manufacture or to find of them news, more effective.

SIAO is the largest African living room where various culture, objets d'art and various are talks representing African art. In spite of several attempts at appropriation of the event by certain countries, this living room remains most important of share the number of vists, exhibitors, media etc….

The International fair of the Craft industry of Ouagadougou is a framework of promotion of the products of the African craft industry. It was born from a common initiative from the National office from the Foreign trade (ONAC) and Chamber of commerce of Industry and Craft industry aiming at putting forward a sector formerly forsaken: that of the craft industry. This initiative gives above all the required to reduce the deficit growing of the trade balance of the African countries vis-a-vis a deterioration of the prices of certain exported or exportable raw materials. The products and branches of industry represented are: sculpture on bronze and wood, Leather working, Basket making, Painting, Textile-clothes industry, the Embroidery, the Jewelry, Musical instruments African, Objects of decoration, Ironwork, Weaving, Batik, Pottery-ceramics, Arms manufacture, Pieces of furniture, the Craft industry of recovery, the Art of the water-bottle, the Craft industry of services, the Craft industry of production.

History of the SIAO

SIAO started from an organized exposure-sale of the Burkinabe craft industry in November 1984 under name " CRAFT INDUSTRY 84" who put in competition the craftsmen of all the provinces of Burkina Faso and the varied products of quality. It made it possible to note that the Burkinabe are large consumers of products of the craft industry as well utility as decorative. But it was especially the occasion to measure the interest of our European guests and American vis-a-vis the variety and with the beauty of works presented.

The shortly after this demonstration, the two institutions (ONAC and Chamber of commerce) made a recommendation tending to make this demonstration a African market of the craft industry, a forum of exchange between the craftsmen of several African countries and the professional purchasers of various origins.

The first edition of SIAO was held from February 20th to 27th 1988. Since then the demonstration knew a passion more and more growing on behalf of the African craftsmen that professionals of the whole world who find in this one of the contact appropriatenesses, of sales, purchase and businesses. The eleventh edition will be held in 2008 from October 31st to November 9th, 2008.

Objective of the SIAO

The SIAO has the role, of:

  • To create a framework of promotion and exchange for the products of the African craft industry in order to facilitate their access to the international markets;

  • To cause and organize the reflection and the dialog on the problems of development of the craft industry of the African countries;
  • To support the diffusion and the rise of the African craft industry as a culture and means of expression;
  • To contribute to the training and the framing of the craftsmen for their car-promotion

Why visit the SIAO?

Because it was illustrated with the wire of time like the only window of the African craft industry, the SIAO remains the framework of exchanges of the speakers of the sector of the craft industry.

To go with the SIAO, it is to go to the meeting of best of the African craft industry. It is to find in only one place, and ten days lasting of the products of craft industry of all the branches of industry: bronze, textile, leather working, masks, antique dealer, pottery, jewelry… To go with the SIAO, it is finally to take part in the rise and the promotion of the actors of a branch of industry which takes part for almost 25% in the GDP of the African countries.
