Cuirassier

The cuirassiers are riding heavily equipped. The reform of Napoleon Bonaparte of the 1st Vendémiaire An XII (September 24th, 1803) transformed 80 regiments of cavalry, including 12 of cuirassiers. In 1807, the regiment passes from 4 to 5 squadrons with a manpower of 1040 men. In spite of the removal of the 5th squadron in 1809, manpower will not decrease. One 13th and one 14th regiment are made up in 1810 and 1812. The minimal size of the cuirassiers was fixed at 1.73m.

The cuirassiers formed part with the Carabinier S of the heavy cavalry, in opposition to the dragon S and Lancier S (cavalry of line), and with the hussard S and hunter S (light cavalry).

They were protected by a drill plate, more for 8th, a backing, forming an armor, which gave them their name. They were armed with a rifle, of a slat, kind of saber right and two guns. The power of their loads were such, that they were familiarly called “the large brothers” or “the men of iron”: Balzac, in the Colonel Chabert and, Victor Hugo in the Poor wretches described these loads like making tremble all the battle field.

The regiments were organized in 2 companies of two squadrons, at a rate of 200 men per squadron.

The mechanization of the XXe century transformed these regiments into regiments of armoured tanks. Some one kept the title of regiments of cuirassiers and are equipped with the armor-plated materials most powerful, such as the Tanks AMX30 and Leclerc.
