History
The origin of the name of Cugnaux
In patois, Cugnaux says Cunhaus (the " nh" occitan decides like the " gn" French). Thus, the name of “CUGNAUX” would come from the word “CUNH” which means in Languedocien “CORNER” = instrument to split wood. This etymological origin attests forest characteristic of the landscape cugnalais and the preoccupations with a grubbing of the Forêt S during the Moyen-âge; this grubbing which allowed the installation and the multiplication of new villages, new cities, new cities….
The “parochial litigation” between Cugnaux and Villeneuve
Cugnaux had since 1239 a parish church covering the current territories of Cugnaux and Villeneuve-Tolosane, 2 communes which thus did of them only one with regard to the religious field. This old church was located in the cemetery him so common to the borders of the communes which thus disputed the possession of it although the official documents always mentioned “Paroisse St Laurent de Cugnaux”.Was the litigation long-lived until in the night of the 4 to the March 5th 1824 where a Incendie (criminal?) the church devastated. Since, in the always common Cemetery, was built the Chapelle Notre Dame of the Fields, of 1869 with 1876, on the initiative of Paul de Boyer Montégut, owner of the Château of Maurens and mayor of Cugnaux.
This vault is dedicated to the Vierge because the local tradition even gives him for origin the miraculous discovery by a peasant of a statue at this place. The statue is posted since on a pedestal behind gate vault in the vault.

After the fire of the first church in 1824, in Cugnaux, a deliberation decided the acquisition of an orchard located at the crossroads of the roads of Toulouse and Pleasure-of-Touch the. It is in the month of November 1824 that the Toulouse Engineer Julien Rivet deposits plane and estimate of the new church which one envisages the frank cost with 44.200 . Work begins in March 1825 is one year after the fire of the old church. To build it, the commune borrows 6.000 francs refunded by an exceptional tax and the State subsidizes with 1.000 francs height. To arrive at the account it was necessary to add the sale of communal goods and a subscription near the parishioners.
Like the old one, the news church is dedicated to Saint Laurent and is delivered to the Culte in 1827. Become too small vis-a-vis the already considerable growth of the population with Cugnaux, the church is increased as of 1853 . At the end of the 19th century, 2 rooms of service are added and it is only in 1936 that the frontage will be completed by the Toulouse architect Jean Louis Gilet.
To finish, let us note that beautiful the brick S pinks which we know remained covered with rough coats white until in 1975!
