The universal format of disc (“Universal Disk Format” or UDF) is a format used for the writings out of packages on CD-RW and CD-R, which is not simple copies of images ISO of Cédérom S. the writing per packages makes it possible CD to be written partially by using recordings of fixed or variable size on several sessions. The CD-RW and CD-R written per variable packages of sizes can (generally) be closed with the format ISO 9660 by simply writing the contents on CD. The formatting out of packages of fixed size cannot be closed with the format ISO 9660 but can be directly written and rewritten. The formatting in the face relative fixes reduced the capacity from approximately 20% at the same medium formatted in ISO 9660 or variable packages of sizes.
The conventional Operating systems offer a support for the only format ISO 9660, except so of the pilot are charged. Information with the UDF format cannot thus be used or listened without closing the file with the format ISO 9660. Once closed, a cédérom cannot be reopened.

More generally, UDF is a specification of format of a Filesystem to store the files on media recordable, mainly of the media in the limited conditions of rewriting, like:
It is mainly used for the discs DVD-Video, but also by the software like DirectCD for Windows of Roxio, or Write UDF de Software Architects.
In practice, UDF is the successor of ISO 9660, supporting larger files, larger discs and more information on the files and repertories (e.g.: it includes/understands the support of the properties of the non-standard files, like the types of files of Apple, the Resource Forks , and other data specific to the operating systems).
