Cryptogam

A Végétal cryptogam is characterized by hidden or not very apparent reproductive bodies. This concept is to be opposed to Phanérogame. Classically, the phanérogames and the cryptogams form together the vegetable kingdom in the vision with three reigns of the alive world (reigns bacterial, vegetable, animal), but these concepts are not adapted any more to phylogenetic classifications resulting from the Cladistique.

Examples of plants cryptogams:

  • the Alga S: the green algas, red algas, brown algas…;
  • the Mushrooms;
  • the Lichen S;
  • the Bryophyte S: foams, Hepatic S,…;
  • the Ptéridophytes: Polypod S, the Asplenium S, the scolopendre S,…
