Origin of the name of Cruseilles

There exist two versions explaining the origin of the name of the commune.

First version : the name would come from Cursillius, name of a noble family of the Middle Ages which would have belonged to the Savoyard primitive nobility or which would have acquired its nobility by acquisition of fields considered noble. In the first times of the feudal mode, the lords had, like the commun run of the people, only of the individual names to which they added the name of their residence or their stronghold. Thus we find in 1113, Guillaume de Cruseilles.

Second version : Cruseilles would come from Crusillia, i.e. croisille, crossed, small cross, and this name would have been employed to indicate the crossroads which occurred in this country. The opinion of this version seems confirmed by the armorial bearings of the city.

For a long time, almost until the French revolution, one wrote Crusillie. This explanation however does not seem to answer the patois. It is true that at the time, of the transpositions of consonants were carried out regularly. Our rural population had early to pronounce Courzelles instead of harder and less elegant Crouzelles.

Nowadays, the population has the choice between Cruseilles and Corzlie in patois.

Its name also appears on charts of the 15th century.

Cruseilles has a park of leisure, “Dronières” with park with hinds, various sporting courses, an artificial lake and a superb nautical center with several basins.
