Crossac

Crossac is a common French, located in the department of the Loire-Atlantique and the area Pays of the Loire. The inhabitants of the commune name the Crossacais and Crossacaises . Surface: 2585 ha, including 1/3 of marsh

Geography

Crossac, leant with the last buttresses of the furrow of Brittany and in edge of Brière, is located at the crossing of two axes: Donges - the Rock-Bernard and Holy Joachim - Bridge-Castle.

History

Crossac was inhabited as of the Préhistoire. Traces of the Neolithic time remain still today scattered on the territory of the commune (Dolmen S, Menhir S).

The Romans also marked their presence by leaving us some objects (bricks, swords, Fibule S, etc….). The name of Crossac is of Latin origin.

At the time feudal, Crossac depended on the Viscount of Donges. The parish was founded by the ER priory in XIe century. Two important fortresses existed already: the castle of the Angle and the castle of Lorieux , which were shaven after the wars of religion about 1685. There remain today only some sections of wall and a heap of stones surrounded by ditches.

The Revolution also left some prints in the local history.
