Cross of the Victoire

The Croix of the Victoire is a jewel of the Art asturien préroman, preserved in the Cámara Santa of the Cathédrale San Salvador of Oviedo and become the emblême of the Asturies.

It is about a cross Latin in the middle of Chêne and covered with gemmeous Or and . Its arms are extended to the extremes and it has a reliquary in its center.

It was carried out by goldsmiths originating in the frank kingdom during the reign of Alphonse III which ordered his development at the beginning of the 10th century to make of it gift with the Cathedral San Salvador d' Oviedo, as that is indicated to the reverse of the cross, beside the Latin inscription “HOC SIGNO TVETVR PIVS. HOC SIGNO VINCITVR INMICVS” (“By this sign the piles is protected. By this sign the enemy is overcome”).

Alpha and the omega are the first and the derinère letters of the alphabet Greek and symbolize the beginning and the end.

According to the legend it is the cross which carried Pélage at the time of the Bataille of Covadonga.
