The Coupe of the League is a competition of Football French organized under its current format since 1994.
This competition gathering only the professional clubs is exploited in matches with direct elimination the same format as the Coupe de France. The winner of the Cut of the League qualifies himself for the following UEFA Cup, reducing to number of tickets towards UEFA Cup by the championship - single case in Europe with the League Cup .
Contrary to the Coupe de France which is organized by the French federation of football (FFF), the Cut of the League as for it is organized by the Professional football league (LFP). All the clubs members of the LFP must take part in this cut.
History
Before 1994
Until 1994, the Cut of the League consists of an estival cut making it possible the clubs to carry out tests of players. The purpose of this old competition is to furnish the long truces caused by the World cups or the Euros.
Many clubs of the elite do not take part in these tests or send their team to it reserves. In the same way, of the years 1950 to 1960, a Coupe Drago puts at the catches the professional clubs eliminated from the Coupe de France. These competitions are without any connection with the Cut of the League installation in 1994.
A competition similar to the Cut of the current League is held however twice in the Années 1960, joining together the professional clubs. The competition is gained in 1963 by the Racing Club of Strasbourg, and in 1965 by FC Nantes.
Since 1994
Since 1994, the Cut of the League opposes the 40 clubs of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 as well as the clubs of National which still have the professional statute.
Of 1995 with 1997, the final takes place with the Parc of the Princes, and since 1998 it is held with the Stade de France.
Often taxed with competition of too, (Raymond Domenech going until describing it as “cut Thing”), this cut tried to be essential by proposing premiums of qualification much higher than those of the Coupe de France.
The President of the LFP decided to make substantial modifications for the season 2006-2007:
- advanced dates of calendar (1/4 of finale played before the winter truce)
- appearance of four heads of series
- exemption of matches until in 1/8èmes of finale for the two clubs qualified directly in League of the Champions
