    Better strikers

    With each match its anecdote

    1st day

    • Egypt - Libya : While being on the list of the 23 Egyptians, Hossam Hassan equalizes the record of the number of participations of a player in a EDGE, record held by the guard of the Ivory Coast Alain Gouaméné, and which is of 7 participations. Hossam Hassan had taken part in the editions 1986, 1988, 1992, 1998, 2000, and 2002 of the EDGE, and played a total of 18 matches until there. Dimensioned Libyan, Shine Alejandro Ruben, excluded in the course of match, is the third South American player naturalized by a African nation to play a EDGE.
    • Morocco - Ivory Coast : Third EDGE for Henri Michel, after the editions 1998 and 2002. It found at the time of this match the Morrocans whom it had led at the time of its first EDGE (in 1998), and that it had led to the quarterfinals.

    • Cameroun - Angola : While signing a triplet Samuel Eto' O enters gradually the legend of the EDGE. First of all by joining the group of the 12 players having marked at least 3 goals in a meeting of EDGE, but especially because it had just signed its 9th goal all EDGE confused, thus joining signal 10 of the strikers of the EDGE, ex-aequo with of the Ivory Coast the Abdoulaye Traoré, and exceeding its compatriot Roger Milla (7 goals).

    • Togo - RD Congo : Never two without three! It was the third time that the two teams clashed in final stage of a EDGE, and for the third time the RD Congo preserves its invincibility vis-a-vis the sparrowhawks.

    • Tunisia - Zambia : Four years and a day earlier, the two selections had already met in opening of their group of Cut of Africa of the Nations. It was with the general sports Stade Modibo Keïta of Bamako on behalf of the EDGE 2002, and the match had finished on the score of 0-0. In addition, like Samuel Eto' O the day before, the Tunisian Francileudo Santos carries out to him also a triplet.

    • South Africa - Guinea : This match was a first for the two teams insofar as they had never met front. For South Africa, it is about sound 34e African adversary since its reaffiliation with CIF and FIFA in 1992. Indeed, the South-Africans had been excluded from the two organizations in 1958, after the latter had refused to introduce an multi-ethnic team to the EDGE 1957, of which they had been disqualified.

    • Nigeria - Ghana : It was about the 58e derby between the two rivals. By being essential 1-0, “Super Eagles” of Nigeria preserve an invincibility going back to 14 years vis-a-vis “Black Stars” of Ghana. The last Ghanaian victory thus goes back to the semi-final of the EDGE 1992. However, Nigeria remains far with the level from the statistics, with only 16 victories for 23 defeats and 19 ties.

    • Zimbabwe - Senegal : The Zimbabwean Gilbert Mushangazhike, present on the bench of his team, is undoubtedly the player who made the longest way to arrive as far as Egypt, because this last plays in D2… of China! The Zimbabweans had already a taste of originality to the last EDGE, with a player who evolved/moved in the championship of Cyprus.

    2nd day

    • Libya - Ivory Coast : If 23 " Éléphants" of Ivory Coast all evolve/move apart from their championship, the Libyens are on the contrary most preserving in the field. With only 5 players out of their championship (1 in Algeria, 1 in Italy, 1 with the Qatar, 1 in Turkey and 1 in Uruguay), they set up the group which counts the most local players.

    • Egypt - Morocco : With a meter which poster 14 victories for only 2 defeats (and from now on 11 ties), and more than 20 years of invincibility, Morocco remains incontestably the pet peeve of the Egyptians. Indeed, the last Egyptian victory over the Morrocans goes back to the EDGE 1986 (organized in Egypt) on an exploit of Abou Zeid at the end of the match at the time of the semi-final. An Indian sign that the “Pharaons” also trail against the two other teams of the Maghreb: Algeria (9 Algerian victories for 6 defeats) and Tunisia (12 Tunisian victories for 11 defeats).

    • Angola - RD Congo : Angola is not still able to be essential. Whereas he played its 8th match into 3 EDGE, Angola did still not gain only one match of Cut of Africa of the Nations, and posts an assessment of 4 defeats for 4 ties. Worrying insofar as so in 1996 and 1998, Angola arrived with the label of beginner, this time it plays with that of future mondialist. Last chance for the last match of the group, against another mondialist: Togo.

    • Cameroun - Togo : If the effective of Cameroun is one of only which does not count any player resulting from the local championship (just as the Ivory Coast, as indicated above), that of the Togo enjoys another characteristic, the representativeness. Indeed, the 23 Togolese evolve/move in 14 championships out of 3 different continents (Germany, England, Austria, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, Suisse; Gabon, Mali, Togo, Tunisia; United Arab Emirates and Qatar)

    • Zambia - Guinea : Zambia is not still able to be raised. Announced like future great power of African football at the dawn of the Nineties, the near total of the team found death in a terrible air crash in 1993, whereas it was in good position to qualify itself with the Football world cup 1994. In spite of that, the team knew to be raised by reaching the final of the 1994, and the 3rd place in 1996. But since 1998, the team is not able even any more to reach the quarterfinals. Fact renewed at the conclusion of this match.

    • Tunisia - South Africa : Descent into Hell for South Africa! Winner in 1996, finalist in 1998, semi-finalist in 2000, quarter of finalist in 2002, the team finishes 3rd of his group in 2004 (and thus eliminated with the first turn), and could finish well last with this EDGE if it had suddenly lost her last match against Zambia.

    • Nigeria - Zimbabwe : It was about the third confrontation between the two teams in less than one year and half. Indeed, Nigeria and Zimbabwe had already met at the time of the qualifications for this same EDGE (which also counted like qualification for the Football world cup 2006). Results, two victories for the Nigerians: 3-0 with Harare and 5-1 with Lagos.

    • Ghana - Senegal : The Ghanaian victory of the day calls all into question in the classification of the group, because in spite of their two victories, the neighbors Nigerians are still not sure of their qualification. Definitely, the Ghanaians are not close releasing their brother-enemies.

    3rd day

    • Egypt - Ivory Coast : Egypt takes its revenge! Just like Nigeria and Zimbabwe the day before, both qualified day met in matches of qualifications. The fellow-members of Didier Drogba had taken the top by twice on those of Mido, whose victory with Alexandria which had been regarded as more humiliating by the Egyptians because it came to break an invincibility in residence in official matches old woman of more than 19 years!

    • Libya - Morocco : A first for Morocco, and not of most amusing for the fans of the Lions of the Atlas. For the first time of its history, Morocco finishes with 0 goal marked at the time of a final stage of EDGE. In 11 Cuts of Africa disputed. That had never arrived.

    • Angola - Togo : The two mondialists ended up falling together. Even if Togo were eliminated since the second day, Angola were likely to pass on the condition of beating the Togoleses, that Cameroun beats the RD Congo, and that the sum of the differences in goals of the two matches is higher than 4. The Angolans, winners by a goal of variation, awaited long minutes a third Cameronian goal at the end of the match, but anything to make, the chance was not theirs side.

    • Cameroun - RD Congo : Never a match will have made to jacassser the conspirationnists of football as much as this one from memorable Algeria-Nigeria of the EDGE 1984. This match, cash for the last day of hen phases, had been suspected of arrangement. Algeria was already qualified, and the second place was played between Nigeria and Malawi, revelation of this Cut of Africa. It was enough in Nigeria to a tie against Algeria to pass, thing which arrived, thus eliminating Malawi. Up to that point, nothing abnormal. But the behavior of the two teams during the match had caused many suspicions: very little engagement, master keys to the adversary as soon as one of the teams arrived at the unfavourable goals, and still much of indices which pushed CIF to be inflicted to the two teams of a fine of a few thousands of dollars for behavior anti-sportsman.
Aujourd'hui, the scenario was somewhat different. If the two matches started per same hour, second half on the other hand started with 8 minutes of shift. Cameroun leading 2-0 to the half-time had continued to attack and to dominate its adversary until the 85e minute, that is to say thus when the other match was finished. The Angolans, who awaited with hope a third Cameronian goal, remained on their hunger and attended an interminable meeting of push-balloon, indicating that the two teams awaited the final whistle on a score which qualified the RD Congo, and their Claude trainer Roy which is not other than… the old selector of the untameable Lions!

    • Tunisia - Guinea : Seldom Tunisia took as many goals against a African adversary. Over the ten last years, only Morocco, Nigeria and Cameroun succeeded in the exploit to put more than three goals against one of best defenses of the continent.

    • Zambia - South Africa : Benedict McCarthy will not have succeeded in making increase its meter of goals in EDGE at the time of this edition 2006. Whereas it counted already 7 goals (all marked at the time of the edition 1998), it could approach signal 10 of the best strikers of the history of Can. a classification where some Samuel Eto' O are classified already fourth with 11 goals, whereas this edition is not even finished.

    • Nigeria - Senegal : Thanks to doubled Obafemi Martins with the 78e and 88e minutes, the Nigerians become specialists in the victories at the end of the match. At the time of the eliminating heats, half of their goals were marked at the time of the last fifteen minutes, which enabled them to tear off 13 points on 21 qu ' they gained: two victories vis-a-vis in Algeria, a victory and no one vis-a-vis Rwanda, a victory vis-a-vis Gabon, and vis-a-vis Zimbabwe.

    • Ghana - Zimbabwe : In two Cut of Africa of the Nations, Zimbabwe will have succeeded in saving the honor by twice with the last match. In spite of two defeats at the time of the first two days, they each time gained the last match. In 2004, it was against Algeria, that they failed to eliminate, and this time against Ghana, that they indeed eliminated. In both cases, suspense concerning the qualifications with the quarterfinals lasted until the end.

    Quarterfinals

    • Egypt - RD Congo : While qualifying high the hand vis-a-vis the ex-Zaireans, Egypt comes to regulate an old dispute which goes back to 32 years with the latter. In 1974, Egypt which organized the second EDGE of its history, hoped well to make the occasion of it be made crown champion of Africa for the third time and exceed Ghana with the classification of the gained EDGE (they had gained two of them each one at the time). But in semi-final, the team taken along by Hassan Shehata, the current selector of the Egyptians, was surprised by Zaire 3 goals with 2, whereas it carried out 2-0 at the beginning of second half. It is besides Zaire which ends up gaining to him also its second Coupe of Africa. Since, the RD Congo never again beat Egypt, it was besides its only victory vis-a-vis the Pharaons, but today one can say that the Egyptians regulated their accounts vis-a-vis the Congoleses.

    • Guinea - Senegal : 39e derby between the two adjoining countries (it is the record of matches played against the same adversary for the two teams), and Senegal always maintains the course by leading 18 victories to 13. Curiously, the matches between Guineans and Senegaleses were seldom also prolific of goals (5 goals): the last time, it was in 1972, when Guinea had gained by 3-2 in qualifications with the African Jeux. There had also been one 4-3 for Guinea in 1969 (qualifications with the EDGE 1970), and one 4-1 for Senegal in 1967 (qualifications with the EDGE 1968).

    • Cameroun - Ivory Coast : In the series " One sees oneself in qualifs', one is re-examined with the tournoi" here the match Cameroun-Coast of Ivory. The two meetings between these nations in the framework of the eliminating heats twinned with the EDGE and the World cup 2006, were undoubtedly the most followed matches this phase. First of all the match outward journey with Yaounde, where the Men from the Ivory Coast were beaten 2-0 after a series of four good performances, of which a victory in Tunisia against the champions of Africa, and another in Egypt at one of the favorites of the group of qualifications. But especially, the return match to Abidjan, during which the qualification with the World cup was to be played, and where the Elephants were surprised at the end of the match by a goal of Achilles Webo.
Finalement the Ivory Coast, without beating Cameroun, succeeded in being qualified for the World cup. Just like after this quarterfinal, where even if the Men from the Ivory Coast did not gain, they ended up passing in semi-final to the favor of one of the more long series of shootings to the goals of the history of the EDGE.

    • Nigeria - Tunisia : Nigeria ended up taking its revenge of the last EDGE. Tunisians and Nigerians had played in semi-final of the EDGE 2004, and it was also following the shootings with the goals that qualified was decided. The last time it was Tunisia which made a success of this exercise, this time it was the turn of the Nigerians.

    Semi-finals

    • Egypt - Senegal : The replacement of Mido to the 79e minute of the match will have undoubtedly been the burlesque action of this Can. When Hassan Shehata, the Egyptian selector decides to make it leave for Amr Zaki, Mido refuses to leave and launches out in a violent discussion with its coach. Spending more than one minute to join the bench of key, it holds head in Shehata, which does not fail to tell him its four truths. One will have needed the intervention of Hossam Hassan to prevent that the two men do not come to the hands. During this time, the Egyptian public took in influenza that which he regarded until there as his star, and the 77.000 spectators present at the stage stressed " Outside, dehors" with Mido. Finally, the coaching of Shehata will have been paying, and Amr Zaki spent only one minute to mark the goal of the Egyptian qualification. Mido, trying to save its image, will join its fellow-members who celebrate the goal, but runs up against the total indifference of the latter. Finally, the loser of this semi-final will not have been Senegal, but indeed Mido, which will have been excluded from the selection and will have been bailed out of a six months sanction on behalf of its federation.

    • Ivory Coast - Nigeria : Augustine Okocha did not make a success of its bet, that to finish its international career on a victory in EDGE, competition which always missed with its prize list. Whereas it had not taken part in the preceding matches of Super Eagles because of a wound, it ends up returning in second half during this semi-final, but does not succeed in reversing the tendency after the goal of Didier Drogba. Finally, " Jay-Jay" will have to be satisfied with one 3rd small consecutive final in EDGE, and why not a third bronze medal.

    Match for the 3rd place

    • Senegal - Nigeria : Record impressing of success for Nigeria: it is about their 9th podium of continuation. More impressive, of 14 participations in the EDGE, Nigeria will have reached 12 times one of the steps of the podium, being made eliminate only twice with the first turn, in 1963 for their first participation and 1982 in Libya. In addition, the Nigerians will have left the EDGE on a record of 102 confused goals all EDGE. It is the second country to cross the fateful bar of the 100 goals after Egypt (124 goals after this EDGE).

    Finale

    • Egypt - Ivory Coast : Egypt takes again the head of the classification of the record of victories in EDGE. If it had equalized in 1998 the record previously held by Ghana (4 victories), it had been made join by Cameroun in 2002. Today, with 5 EDGE with the meter, Egypt takes again with it only a throne which it had lost in 1982. It is also the 11th time (on 25) that the organizing country gains the Coupe of Africa. Other made note, it acted of the 6th finale of EDGE to be finished with the shootings with the goals (3rd time on 4 in this decade).
