Crooked Island ( hooked island English ) is a island and a district of the the Bahamas.
Geography
Crooked Island is located at the south-east of the
the Bahamas, one of the three large islands of a Lagon called the Baie of Acklins (others being
Acklins and Long Cay).
Demography
With the census of 2000,
Crooked Island counted 350 inhabitants.
The principal village of the island east Colonel Hill.
Economy
The inhabitants live mainly of fishing and agriculture.
Crooked Island has an airport ( Crooked , code AITA: CRY).
History
Crooked Island was colonized at the end of the years 1780 by American loyal supporters who established cotton plantations employing more than one thousand of slaves. After the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, the plantations were replaced by the sponge harvest.
District
Crooked Island is also the name of a district of the Bahamas. It includes/understands, in addition to the island of the same name, Long Cay , located at south-west, and Samana Cay , in the North-East. It carries number 10 on the chart of the districts.
