History

Antiquity

Controversies on the origin of Crocq

A long time one believed that Crocq had been founded by a detachment of Alamans, in 256. Indeed, according to an oral tradition collected by Gregoire de Tour, and according to Bernard Germain of Lacépède in general, physical and civil History of Europe, since the last years of Ve century until worms the medium of the XVIIIe , Alamans would have invaded Auvergne after having traversed the provinces of the East of Gaulle, plundering Augustonemetum and probably destroying Beauclair close to Herment, with the passage. They would have continued while crossing Walk and the Limousin but were stopped and overcome in the Vendée. Reconsidering their steps after their defeat and pursued by the victims of their confusions at the time of their first passage, " they took refuge at the top of a small mountain, located at the borders of Walk and Auvergne which dominated the surrounding countries ". The tradition reports then that after several years of stay and combat, their chief who was called Crocus , Chrocus or Krokus , died. In remembering, its name was given by Alamans survivors to their camping, but the orthography then changed with time to become currently Crocq. Ambroise Tardieu, in his illustrated History of Auzances and Crocq in second half of the 19th century, includes this explanation, which it presents like a legend, not to reject completely, " although it appears a fable". A divergence also appears with what Lacépède wrote: the " captain would have left a detachment of his soldiers on the monticule, then désert" , but Tardieu implies that it is at the time of its first passage.

However, today, all the historians are today of agreement to recognize that it is certainly false . According to Ernest Gligny, very often, the history is modern and was invented to only try to explain a forgotten direction. He would explain it rather the etymology of Crocq by C (A) r+cuc meaning height, top stony.
