Creugenat
Creugenat is a pit located on the commune of Chevenez (canton of the Jura) in Suisse, which emits water in the event of raw and gives rise to a temporary river, Creugenat. The emissions are about 4 with more than 10 per year, they can last of a few hours with 8 to 10 days, with a flow which can reach 15 to 20 m3/s. water follows the plain of Courtedoux and is thrown in the Allaine with Porrentruy.
The water which leaves the pit comes from an underground river called the Ajoulote, it gives rise to the source of the Beuchire to Porrentruy and its collateral Favergeate, the Chaumont, the Graviers, etc
The popular beliefs, say to us that the name Creugenat comes from the patois and means hollow of the witches. Recently following many observations and many research in files, one concludes that the Creugenat term does not want to say Trou of the Witches, but comes rather from the patois " creûjenat" , which wants to say small hollow or better still, according to the results of the made observations these last years, of the verb " creûjenaie" , to dig. The vestiges of an important wall of reserve are visible in the estavelle one.
This pit which emits some times per year caused many legends. The first explorations of the pit took place towards 1934, carried out by Lucien Lièvre and Albert Perronne.
