Craters off the Moon is a natural reserve located in the plain of the Snake River in the center of the Idaho. The reserve was created in 1924 and was increased in 2000 to extend on a surface from approximately 3  000 km ². This site contains three great lava flows which extend along the Rift from Idaho. It has also examples of about the whole of the varieties of lava:

  • Moulding of tree flarings: the lava in fusion surrounds the tree, cools sufficiently quickly to print the reasons for the bark, but not enough not to carbonize the arbre.
  • Tube of lava: the lava in fusion cools and forms on the surface a crust. But under this one it continues to run, thus leaving a cave cylindrique.

The good conservation of the site is due to its geological youth (Holocène): it was formed between -15  000 and -2  000 years.
