Crassus

Crassus ( Marcus Licinius Crassus Divine), general and Roman statesman . Born towards 115 av. J. - C., with Rome and died in 53 av. J. - C. with Carrhes (Harran, in Turkey). At the time of the Proscription S of Cinna, it was constrained to flee in Spain, then to died from this last it returned in Italy while passing by the Africa.

In 71 av. J. - C., Crassus crushes the revolt of Spartacus. But when Pompée returns from its victorious countryside against Sertorius in the Iberian peninsula, it runs up against the survivors, that it crushes, and thus steals the victory in Crassus. Whereas Pompée obtains the Triomphe, Crassus must be satisfied with a less honor. That will generate tensions between the two rivals, who, assoiffés of being able, nevertheless will be combined against the Sénat and will become both Consuls of -70. This magistrature of Crassus was perfectly illegal, because it had just deposited the Préture (that of Pumped was it as much because it did not have the necessary age) and this carried a new blow to the republican institutions.

The consulate of both is marked by the destruction of all the laws of Sylla: restoration of the capacities of the Powerful orators of the plebs, re-establishment of the Censure, inscription on the lists of citizens of 100.000 Italian run to Rome, restoration of the Knights in the jurys of the courts, with the detriment of the senators.

In 60 av. J. - C., Crassus, Pumped and César are all the three in opposition with the Senate. The three men decide to be combined to make elect César consul the following year, and, thus, to obtain from this last the realization of the requirements that the Sénat refused to satisfy. Crassus, which was the richest man of Rome, arrived, thanks to corruption, to make succeed the project.

He was re-elected consul, again with Pompée in 55 av. J. - C. and a law assigned the to him province of Syria during five years. Crassus hoped to draw some more richness and from military glory.

In 53 av. J. - C., on the councils of Abgar II Ariamnès, it crosses the Euphrate to face the Parthes but was overcome with the Bataille of Carrhes. Few days afterwards, it were killed during an interview with the Parthian general Suréna. Its head was then sent to the Parthian king, Orodès II. He died in a not very orthodoxe way. Indeed, it was so avid that Suréna made him run gold in fusion in the mouth by telling him " Thus satisfy you of this metal of which you are so avid! ". His/her son, Publius Crassus, was killed during the same battle.

Because of its immense richness, it was called Dives (“the Rich person”). Its fortune was built with various sources, it practiced the traffic of Esclave S, it had mines of money and it acquired many grounds and houses. It the USA in two manners for these acquisitions: on the one hand it made many acquisitions at the time of the proscriptions of Sylla; in addition it repurchased the houses set fire to at low prices at the time even of their fire before calling upon its many customer S (nearly 500) to stop the fire.
