Craiova

Craiova ( /kra ' jo.va/ , Krajova writes before) is a town of Romania, Chef-lieu of the Judeţ de Dolj in Romania, located close to the left bank of the Jiu (river) in Olténie central at a roughly equivalent distance from the southernmost Carpates and the Danube. Craiova is the principal commercial city in the west of Bucharest.

History

Craiova, which occupies the site of castrates Roman Pelendava , is the capital of Olténie. With the old Middle Ages the banns , the title (Slavic word of origin) highest of Boyard of Valachie, resulted in the beginning from the family Craioveşti. In 1900, Craiova accounted for 43.1% of the industry of Olténie; one counted 924 there company industrial (including 20 large industrial plant, employing 1.078 workmen). The number of large industrial plant amounted to 40 in 1925. The banking system also developed at the beginning of the 20th century (there were then 6 banks and 2 exchange offices).

Economy

Craiova is the city of the old model of Citroen Visa, in Rumanian Oltcit, Daewoo of 1994 to 2007 and soon Ford. Renault, very interested by the factory to manufacture the Logan there did not manage to repurchase this one.

Tourism

The park of Romanescu is very large (90 hectares) and favourable with the excursions, with its lake and its restaurant with terrace-unloading dock. The model of this park presented by the French architect Edgar Redont obtained the Grand Prix of the World Fair of Paris in 1900. It seems that it is about the second landscape park in Europe from its surface downtown. The central place is located in front of the Prefecture. On this place, one can admire the statue of Michel the Brave man. The city has several cinemas: Patria, Modern.

The Museum of Art of Craïova has several sculptures of Constantin Brâncuşi of which the Kiss and of many fabrics of Theodor Pallady, friendly painter of Matisse. There exists also an interesting museum of Ethnography and a historical Museum.

Education

The Université of Craiova is an important university center in Romania. There exist many colleges with Craiova, most important are the colleges Carol Ier, Frères Buzeşti, Elena Cuza, Stefan Velovan, Odobleja.

Sport

The city also has a football club, Universitatea Craiova, and a stage, called Ion Oblemenco. This name comes from a large footballer originating in Craiova.
