Crésilas
Crésilas (in Greek old Κρησίλας / Krêsílas ) is a Greek sculptor of the fifth century BC, contemporary of Phidias.
Work
Originating in the city of Cydonia, in Crete, it carries out its career with Athens. One owes him the Portrait of “Olympian” Périclès known as which was placed on the Acropole. This statue in Bronze, realized after the death of the statesman, represented it upright in an attitude close to that of the Bronzes of Riace. She was recognized in several hermès Roman registered voters, of which one with the Musées of the Vatican (see opposite) and another with the British Museum.
One brings the style closer to Olympian Périclès of the type of Athéna known as Pallas de Velletri , whose statue éponyme is preserved at the Musée of Louvre and the type known as of Diomède to the lance , whose specimens appear in the Glyptothèque of Munich (see the article Diomède) and in Louvre.
He is also the author of a the wounded Amazon carried out within the framework of the contest organized in 440 - 430 av. J. - C. for the Temple of Artémis with Éphèse and finally gained by Polyclète. The type of the wounded Amazon is known by many copies which it is difficult to allot to the various candidates. One generally hesitates for Crésilas between the type of Capitole-Sôsiclès - specimens with the Musées of Capitole, the Vatican and Louvre - and the Berlin-Lansdowne-Sciarra type - specimen with the Metropolitan Museum off Art.
One also allots a statue of dying casualty to him described by Pline, perhaps the same one as the “bronze statue of Diitréphès, wounded by arrows” that Pausanias sees on the Acropolis at 2nd century a. J. - C. a base gone back to 450 av. J. - C. carries indeed the inscription: “Hermolycos, wire of Diitréphès, in dîme. Work of Crésilas. ”
We are informed also of a Colorado beetle (carrying lance) - perhaps the Diomède mentioned above -, of a votive cow with Déméter Chthonia and of an ex-voto with Athéna Tritogénie.
