Crépy-in-Valois

Crépy-in-Valois is a common French, located in the department of the Oise and the area Picardy.

The inhabitants are called Crépynois.

Geography

Located at 65 km in north east of Paris, in the middle of the Valois. Area of openfield, Valois is the field of the industrial field crop (cereals, beets, oilseeds, vegetables of full fields). The city of Crépy-in-Valois is served by a station of the line Paris - Hirson. Southern limit of the Picardy linguistic field (contrary to the North of France, the Picardy one is not spoken any more in Valois).

Characteristic : Crépy-in-Valois is the French capital of the Tir to the arc.

History

The site of Crépy-in-Valois was probably occupied by the Romans.

Periods medieval and modern As from the 10th century, Crépy-in-Valois becomes the residence of the counts of Valois, powerful vassal of the Kings de France until 1213, date on which Valois is integrated into the field of the Crown. Given in prerogative, it returns thus to Louis of Orleans which transforms it into duchy.

Crépy-in-Valois will know an economic prosperity with the S with the Foires of Champagne, the city being on one of the roads between the Flanders and the Champagne. But, the city is touched by the One hundred Year old war. In addition, as of, Villers-Cotterêts is preferred by the kings of France. The city then knows a slow decline until the French revolution.

contemporary Period Under the French revolution, the popular company of Crépy is particularly active (cf Jacques Bernet, Annales Historical Compiégnoises, n°31).

It is necessary to await the arrival of the railroad in 1861 and the construction of the factory of Clair furnishing in 1873? (cf Jean-Marie Tomasini, 1987) so that the city finds an economic vitality. The city makes remarkable great strides under the era of the mayor Gustave Chopinet (mayorat, 1888-1918). In 1902, the municipal council divides on bottom of religious quarrels so much so that it is dissolved in the Council of Ministers, on June 29th, 1902 (cf Eric Dancoisne, historical Annales compiégnoises N°103-104, autumn 2006)

Gustave Chopinet is taken as an hostage with ten of other Crépynois on September 2nd, 1914 at the time of the German invasion. Its act of bravery is worth to him to obtain the Legion of honor in 1917. The city suffers particularly from the German bombardments in 1918. The Clair factory Clear is partly destroyed. The years of post-war period are remembered by the high cost of living, a severe crisis of residences. Under the action of Jean Vassal (1919-1953) the first HBM are carried out.

The Socialist SFIO Jean Vassal is maintained by Vichy under the Occupation Nazi. In September 1944, it is deposited by the local FFI. But against any waiting, it is the prefect gaullist Yves Pérony who maintains it. In November 1944, Jean Vassal is excluded from the SFIO. He joined RPF in 1948. (cf Dancoisne, master's paper, Departmental records of Oise).

In 1953, Doctor Michel Dupuy charms the seat of mayor to the left. Under its various mandates, the city passes from 5000 inhabitants to 14000 inhabitants, of 1953 with his departure in 1995.

The children victims of the highway catastrophe of Beaune on July 31st, 1982 lived here. The Accident of Beaune made 53 dead including 44 children of less than 15 years.

; The castle of Philippe de Crépy-Nanteuil
the Saint-Aubin vault is built about 1170-1180 by Thibault III of Crépy-Nanteuil. His/her son Philippe Ier builds, coupled with this one, a noble residence seigneuriale overhanging the ramparts of the medieval city, shortly after the victory of Bouvines (1214) which saw it fighting at the sides of its suzerain the king of France Philippe Auguste.
At the 16th century, the “castle” becomes the seat of the administration of the duchy of Valois.
At the 18th century, the basements are moulted in a prison where the poet Gerard de Nerval spends an icy night of October.
Since 1949, it shelters the museum of Archerie and Valois.

; Archerie, a collection unique in France

elaborate prehistoric Armes there is more than 10.000 years, arcs of the Olympic champions or last innovations of the factors of arcs of hunting, the collections of the museum testify to the diversity and the evolution of the practices related to the shooting with the arc.
Far from confining itself with the Western sphere, they evoke the presence of the arc on all the continents.
Today, the companies of arc of Valois, like Picardy and Ile-de-France, accurately maintain the traditions the “noble play of Arc”.
the collections of the museum show this attachment: shooting of the slaughtering the bird of which the winner is designated king of the company for the year, provincial bouquet which gathers them all according to an immutable ritual, attaching figure of holy Sebastien, owner of the archers since the Middle Ages.

; The sacred art of Valois

the high rooms of the museum shelter a rich person collection of sacred art of the Middle Ages at the 19th century, of which is detached a beautiful unit from medieval statues and Rebirth, coming of more than one about thirty churches and vaults of Valois.
