History
The serge of Crèvecœur
- After Languedoc, Picardy was, of all the French provinces, strongest with regard to wool industry at the 17th century and the 18th century.
Even if there is evil to imagine it today, the area of Crèvecœur were, until the 19th century, a sector where prevailed the wool production, craft industries of weaving…
The production of Crèvecœur and 3 close villages was of 25.000 parts of serge in 1692, but it was about a cyclic activity with one time of prosperity during the first quarter of the 17th century, followed by a deep depression until in 1660. The revival had been slow until 1692, then with a growth of 75% until in 1708. One had thus passed from 25.000 parts in 1692 to 41.200 in 1708 to fall down to 16.300 parts in 1718-1719.
It should not be thought that weaving was done in great manufactures, as it will be the case after the Industrial revolution. Work was done in residence, and the serge maker went with his parts woven to the Bureau of Crèvecœur to make them control by the inspector of manufactures of Grandvilliers or its substitutes, guard-sworn, who them " plombaient" if the fabrics were in conformity with the rules of the Corporation.
With the second half-year 1732,68 craftsmen manufactured 1.508 rolls of material on 89 weaving looms, but the census indicated that 95 trades did not have a work. These parts bore the name of Escot, Blicourt, Anacoste , or Alépine
All in all, the country was poor, and, in 1732, Lochait de Vaudibon returned account to the Chauvelin Intendant that " guard-sworn and the workmen of the dependence of the office of Crevecœur are or badly with their ease, or poor. Their trade rolls on a bottom from 30 to 40 books. Their houses are furnished only with the specific ustanciles to their work and this work gives them apeinne the bread necessary to their subsistence "
