History

The origin of Coutouvre would go back to the existence of a Gallo-Roman village called " COSTOLBRUM" , deformed in " COSTOBRUM" what means " the slope ouvert".
Towards 970, under the reign of Lothaire, " is mentioned; COTOBRIO" villa; , become towards 1410 " COTHOBRIO". The village and its surroundings were devastated during the Guerre One hundred Year old by the Grandes companies.
The village of Coutouvre was called initially " COMBOUARE" , name which one finds on the old charts (and which, by deformation, gave " Combière" , district which one finds at the exit of agglomeration, along the secondary road 31 leading to Thizy), then " COTVRE" , become " COULTOURE". These names were used with the land register.

At the 16th century, it was the stronghold of the Game preserve (name preserved by the castle), for then passing to the family of Arcy in 1601, then at the 18th century, the Damas d' Audour.
Before the Revolution, it depended on the archpriest of Beaujeu, diocese of Mâcon, therefore in Beaujolais. And it is the prior of the Abbey of St-Vincent-of-Mâcon which names the priest since the 9th siècle.
July 29th 1440, the king Charles VII crosses the parish. This day of St Denis will become parish fair. The first parochial register is open in 1668.

The tower of Morland is an old relay of hunting of the Dukes of Burgundy at the 16th century, whereas the country was still covered with forests. With the Revolution the commune counted 950 inhabitants.

Coutouvre was and remains a rural district. Agriculture was diversified formerly. One cultivated there more cereals, but the vine growing was also présente.
In the middle of the 19th century, the population was twice more important. Let us imagine the animation which could reign there with step less than 17 grocers, bakers and of many trade without counting the coffees (11 in 1901).
In addition to agriculture, the very whole area was strongly marked by weaving. Initially in residence, then at the end of the 18th century it was industrialized with the arrival of the steam engine.

Coutouvre knew the creation of two factories in 1847 and 1854. The Lacroix company makes still today synthetic fiber grinding.

Electricity arrived at the borough about 1928, to shift in 1938. The running water and mains drainage were installed in the agglomeration in 1961. Then this last was extended and supplemented by a mud tank in 1980. The streets and the ways were tarred in 1962. The natural gas serves the agglomeration since end 2002.
There does not exist in France of village of the same name.
