Courtelevant
Courtelevant is a commune of the Territoire of Belfort belonging to the canton of Delle. The village, which counted 278 inhabitants in 1803, shelters some currently a little less than 400 (exactly 378 with the census of 1999).
It is located at 7 km of Delle and 27 km of Belfort, the chief town of department. The Vendline, a river which takes its source in Suisse close to Vendlincourt, sprinkles it before going to join the Coeuvatte , another river of Swiss origin, with Florimont.
The Roman way which connected Mandeure to Augst, close to Basle, passed on the territory of Courtelevant. The name of the village would come from coupled Latin curtis in the name of Germanic man " Hilbung". In 1262 Courtelevant had already a church. For the period when Ferrette belonged to the Austrian possessions, the village was known under its German name of Herbsdorf (even etymology that the French name). During the Guerre Thirty Year old the region was devastated by the Swedes and Courtelevant was on their way. The treaty of Westphalia of 1648 devoted the fastening of the area to France. The Saint-Etienne church was restored in 1812.
The mill of Courtelevant is a witness of an activity which was very widespread until the XIXe century: the use of the force of water to make turn the grinding stones of a mill to flour. It is now arranged in museum and present at the public various aspects of the techniques used before great industrial development.
