County of Vestfold

The county of Vestfold ( Norwegian Vestfold fylke in ) is a Norwegian county located at the south of the country. It is close to the counties of Buskerud and Telemark. Its administrative center is at Tønsberg.

General information

Vestfold, as its name indicates it, is in the west of the Fjord of Oslo. It includes/understands several small but famous Norwegian cities, such as Larvik, Sandefjord, Tønsberg and Horten. The county is crossed by the river Numedalslågen, and the littoral is enamelled many islands.

The family of Harald Ier was originating in this area. Until the advent of this last, Vestfold constituted a small kingdom independent. As from the 10th century, the local kings could assert themselves like the first dynasty starting the unification of Norway.

The town of Kaupang, whose foundation goes back to the era Viking, is regarded as the oldest city of the country.

Vestfold is known for its maritime activities. Formerly places of rallying for the hunters of Whale S, the coastal towns of the county live now of the fishing and the construction of boats. Some forests are also exploited, inside the grounds. One finds there finally among the best cultivable grounds of the country.
