County of Västra Götaland

The county of Västra Götaland ( Västra Götalands Län in Swedish) is a county Swedish located on the west coast of the country. It is close to the counties of Värmland, Örebro, Östergötland, Jönköping and Halland. It also divides a border with the Norwegian county of Østfold, and borders the lakes Vättern and Vänern.

It was creates in 1998 by the fusion of the old counties of Göteborgs och Bohus, Älvsborg and Skaraborg.

Its capital is Gothenburg where the prefect resides. But the seat of the regional coneil is with Vänersborg, old chief town of the Comté of Älvsborg.

It is the second of the Swedish counties after the Comté of Stockholm by the population.

Historical provinces

The territory of the county of Västra Götaland corresponds to the old limits of the historical provinces of Västergötland, Bohuslän and Dalsland, except for the two communes of Mullsjö and Habo, in Västergötland, which has chosi, in a referendum, to belong to the Comté of Jönköping during fusion in 1998.

Heraldic

The blazon of the county was designed in 1999, during the creation of this new administrative entity. It consists of a combination of the blazons of the town of Gothenburg and historical provinces of Västergötland, Bohuslän and Dalsland. When it is represented with a royal crown, the blazon symbolizes the Board of directors of the county.

Administration

The county was creates in 1999 by the fusion of the three old counties of Gothenburg-and-Bohus, Älvsborg and Skaraborg.

The main missions of the Board of directors of the county ( Länsstyrelse ), directed by the prefect of the county, are to satisfy the main trends provided by the Parlement and the Gouvernement, to promote the development of the county and to lay down regional objectives.

Policy

The District council of Västra Götaland ( Västra Götalandsregionen in Swedish) is the advanced shape of local assembly, specific to this county and those of Skåne and Gotland. For one trial period, this institution assumed certain tasks normally reserved for the Board of directors of the county or the Swedish Parlement.
