County of Telemark

The county of Telemark ( Norwegian Telemark fylke in ) is a Norwegian county located at the south of the country. It is close to the counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. Its administrative center is at Skien and the council of the county is chaired by preserving the Gunn Marit Helgesen.

General information

The county is in the south-east of Norway, and extends from the plate of Hardangervidda at the coast. The littoral goes from the Fjord Langesundsfjorden until the limit of the Aust-Agder. The landscape of Telemark, made up of many hills and valleys, is very broken and heterogeneous.

At the beginning of the era Viking, and the advent of Harald Ier, Telemark formed several small kingdoms independent: the Kingdom of Telemark and those of Grenland and Vestmar.

The greatest centers of population are Skien, Porsgrunn, Notodden, Rjukan and Kragerø.

There exists a bovine race resulting from this area, the telemarkfe, known as télémark in French.

Population

The population of Telemark was of 166.700 people at January 1st, 2007, that is to say 3,58% of the Norwegian population.

It is thirteenth the county of Norway by its number of inhabitants.

Geography

The Gaustatoppen, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful mountains of Norway, dominates the town of Rjukan in the commune of Tinn with its 1.883 Mr. In clear weather one can see the Sweden in the east and the sea in the south. The sight makes it possible to contemplate a sixth of Norway.

More the big lake of the county is the Nisser in the commune of Nissedal. Its surface is of 76,30 km and its depth 234 meters, which makes of it the tenth plus big lake of Norway.

Telemark has a nature splendid and varied which enables him to be regarded as “Norway in miniature”, with archipelagoes as to Kragerø, from the plates and the mountains as to Rjukan.

With 15.299 km, Telemark is the tenth county of Norway by its size.
