The area however already had been visited by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.
The Mission Santa Barbara was founded the December 4th 1786 in what is today Santa Barbara, which gave its name to the county. This one is one of the original counties of the state created in 1850. Parts of its territory were given to the Comté of Ventura in 1872.
