County of Rogaland

The county of Rogaland is a Norwegian county located at the south-west of the country. It is close to the counties of Hordaland, Telemark, Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder. Its administrative center is at Stavanger.

General information

Populated as of the age of the stone, as proves it the discovery of the Squelette of a young boy of this period, the county was called Rygjafylke at the time of the Viking S. Until his conquest by Harald Ier, it constituted a small independent kingdom.

Rogaland is a county of the littoral and includes/understands many islands, of which most important is Karmøy. Stavanger is the fourth urban area of Norway, after Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim.

The island of Karmøy conceals large layers of Cuivre: it is there that was extracted which was used to build the Statue of freedom. Rogaland is the most important county of the country with regard to the exploitation of the Gaz and the Pétrole. Conferences on oil and the environment often take place with Stavanger.

The “farm of the age of iron”, in Stavanger, is a reconstitution of a site dating from the years 350 with 500. The city also counts an archaeological museum dedicated to the many traces of the old story of Rogaland. Another museum, called the “Farm Viking”, is located at Karmøy.

A series of cultural festivals and congresses are regularly organized in the county, like the “Festival of the Chamber music” and the “Maijazz Festival” with Stavanger.

Communes

The county of Rogaland is subdivided in 25 communes ( Kommuner ) at the local level:
