County of Poitiers

At the 10th century, the counts of Poitiers become dukes of Aquitaine.

Following the Made of the strongholds of Jean-without-Ground in 1204, Poitou is confiscated by the king de France. The county is granted in Apanage to Alphonse of Poitiers and returns to the crown to its death.

To the Treated of Brétigny (1360), Poitou is yielded to England. It is reconquered shortly after (December 1372) by Bertrand of Guesclin and Jean de Berry to which it county is given in prerogative. To its death, the county returns to the royal Domaine.

In 1314, the county of Poitou is set up in county-peerage - to note however that the dukes of Aquitaine had made party of the 6 primitive laic pars.
