County of Misfortune
The Comté of Misfortune is a county located in the south-eastern corner of the state of the Oregon. In 2000 its population was of 31.615 inhabitants. Its chief town is Vale and its more big city is Ontario.
History
The county of Misfortune was created the February 27th 1887 starting from the southern portion of the Comté of Baker. Its name comes from the Malheur river which runs there. He was first of all inhabited by the mining ones and tradesmen at the beginning of the Années 1860. The discovery of Or in 1863 attracted a more significant development and revealed colonies and ranches. Basque S settled in the area in the Années 1890 and were very committed in the breeding of sheep.
Economy
The county is to 94% agricultural. Irrigated fields are in the north-eastern corner of the county, under the name of Western Treasure Valley and are the center of an intensive and diversified culture. The economy of the county also depends on tourism.
The County being in economic relations with the Idaho the major part of its territory follows a time zone different from the remainder of the Oregon.
The County of Misfortune is poorest of the state with approximately 18,3% of its inhabitants living in situation of poverty.
Geography
According to the Office of the census of the United States, the county has a surface of 25.719 km ². 111 km ² consist of water levels, which accounts for 0,43% of entire surface.
