County of Leitrim

The Comté of Leitrim (in Gaelic Contae Liatroma ) is an administrative unit of the Irish Republic located at the border of the Northern Ireland in the province of the Connacht.

The County has a very small outlet on the Atlantic coast (3 kilometers in all and for all in the west of Bundoran), but is mainly a county of the interior. It is surrounded by the counties of Donegal in north, Fermanagh in the North-East, Cavan in the east, Longford in the south, Roscommon and Sligo in the west. Its surface is of 1588 km ² for: 28950 inhabitants in 2006; it is thus one of smallest by its population and its surface.

The river Shannon and the Lough Allen divide the County into two practically equal shares. The capital of the County is with Carrick-one-Shannon (: 3163 inhabitants).

Formerly Leitrim formed half of the Kingdom of Breifne. The area was for a long time under the influence of the family O' Rourke of Dromahair, whose heraldic lion is always on the weapons of the County. Very strong bonds existed with the other part of Breifne, which forms the County of Cavan today, and the clan O' Reilly which occupied this area.

For all the medieval period , and until the 17th century, the county was covered with immense forests. But they disappeared, leaving room to not very fertile grounds. The County was very strongly touched by the Grande Famine of 1849. Of: 155000 inhabitants in 1841, it forever ceased losing its inhabitants and counts some at the beginning of the 21e century hardly more: 25000.

Small anecdote: it is into 2003 that the first tricolor fires of circulation of the County were installed, close to Carrick-one-Shannon.
