County of Haiyan (Qinghai)

The county of Haiyan (海晏县; Pinyin: Hǎiyàn Xiàn) is an administrative subdivision of the province of the Qinghai in China. It is placed under the jurisdiction of the autonomous Préfecture Tibetan of Haibei. Its chief town is the town of Xihai (西海郡).

The population of the county was of: 30585 inhabitants in 1999.
Old production site of nuclear weapons
The first Chinese site devoted at the same time in the search and the production of nuclear weapons was established between the town of Xihai and the Lac Qinghai, in the meadow of Jingyintan, at the end of the Années 1950. This military base secret, known under the names of Ninth Academy or Factory 221 , included/understood, on a surface of approximately 1000 km ², all kinds of surface installations and underground, laboratories, production centres and of storage. The site was closed in 1987 and was déclassifié in 1993. Certain parts have had for summer open to the public in the form of museum.The activity of the site caused a pollution of the ground by various radioactive products. In addition, taking into account its proximity of the lake Qinghai (about fifteen kilometers), and existence of a direct shoed connection, it is very probable that the lake was used like discharges for various waste, of which radioactive waste.
