County of Galway
The Comté of Galway (in Gaelic Contae Na Gaillimhe ) is an administrative unit of the Irish Republic located on the west coast of the island in the province of the Connacht.
Its surface is of 6.148 km ² for: 231670 inhabitants in 2006. It is the second larger County after that of Cork. It is surrounded of the Counties of Mayo, Roscommon, Laois, North-Tipperary and Clare. Its capital and more big city are Galway.
The County is presented in two distinct parts between which is located the town of Galway and the Lough Corrib (more big lake of Ireland): in the east one finds a system of plains; in the west the Connemara with several mountainous systems, the Twelve Bens ( Na Beanna Beola ), the Maum Turk mountains, and Slieve Aughty. Off the coasts a very great number of islands is of which most important are the islands of Aran and Inisbofin.
The County counts several zones where Gaelic remains very long-lived. Galway is strongly influenced by the language and the Gaélique culture in its area of Connemara and the Aran islands, where Gaelic is still spoken.
