County of Essex (Massachusetts)

The county of Essex is a county located at the North-East of the State of the Massachusetts to the the United States. With the census of 2000, its population rose with 723.419 people. There exist two Chef-lieu X: Salem and Lawrence.

The county extends on 2.146 km ². It is bordered by the New Hampshire in north, the Atlantic Ocean in the east, the Comté of Suffolk in the south and the Comté of Middlesex in the west.

Following the example growing number of counties of Massachusetts, the county of Essex exists today only as a historical geographical area and does not have any more a specific government. The majority of the executive and elective functions local were transferred to the agencies from the State in 1999.
